Preparing a stock after sanding

I've recently bought a hw77 2nd hand and the stock had been varnished and looked terrible, so i've sanded it down back to the bare wood and it's now lovely and smooth. Bein this is my first time oiling a stock what would you recommend me doin to it next?

Sealing it with oil was my first thought but then i thought maybe to get it to it's original colour when new it needed to be stained? Has anyone had experience going through this process? Hope someone can help?

Cheers in advance for any replies,

regards,

Scott

Yes - I have.

I used the CCL kit on an old walnut shotgun stock - absolutely brilliant. I bought the kit at a local gunshop - but essentially it is this kit:- CCL Kit

The red oil brought out incredible grain in the timber - much, much better than I imagined. The hardest part is the intial preperation removing the old finish without excessive sanding and messing up the shape and wood surface. If you've already done that then you just have the best part of the job left to do!

I followed the instructions closely and the finished result is as professional as I could have achieved from a 'proper' job! I was very pleased and wouldn't hesitate to have another go.

Also - see the 'pinned' topic in this DIY section on this very topic.
