Beardo
get a cheap analogue travel alarm. attach alarm to fixed post. attached battery (without battery cover installed) to bait using line of some sort. bait gets taken, battery comes out. time of visit recorded

Paul223
I've found electric tape around the battery works well, stuck to itself and not wrapped around as it may undo and go slack and the battery needs to be set just off the point of jumping, fishing line tied to the battery tends to jam the battery in, then tie the tape and line together and strech across a track or attach to bait

Fatcatsplat
Surely attaching the string to the pin of a short fuse hand grenade would kill two birds with one stone and also free up the use of your alarm clock to wake you in the early mornings. That's assuming that the explosion doesn't do the trick.
