Anyone tried lamping with a springer.

done a good bit of it with the old lurchers but this will be a first.

i know they are not the fastest dog in the world, but lamping rabbits is not all about speed.

the dog already knows how to follow the beam, and has picked a good few up in day light.

he is live to hand and comes back on command, cant see a down side to it.

can anyone on here.please.

mark, to be honest mate a friend of mine has got a springer which can turn his paw to anything, my mate is a proper dog man, and his springer, does the gundog work,go's out with the lurchers, and even has abit of fun with the terriers, I'm not joking you mate, give it a go try getting images and telling us about your night out.... ;)

can't wait to hear how it goes.

thanks Rs.

ollie in not your usual springer spaniel.

he lives for foxing, and is well at home tracking roe deer and killing rats

but is a great dog in the hide for pigeon shooting.

if he has a fault its he wont retrieve foxes, anything else no problem, just foxes he wont even try to bring back.

the pick should be of a cub he had last year.

a few lads on here have seen him on the foxes and just believe it.

well done to you mate, buzzing for you, what a great first spaniel, he must of picked it all up from the lurchers nd terriers, it shows how versatile these cracking dogs are, you sound spot on mark a proper dog man like, not many about anymore, its always the way aswell these dogs never have paperwork, it shows that it is just a pile of paper doesn't it!!!!

wishing i acquired one of them pups, i know they will be 100 % in everyway, whats the bitch like you put him to.

Thanks R.

bitch is steady away, not as keen as ollie, was hard work when i first got her but she is doing ok.

was a sad day they stopped the dogging game for a lot of lads.

( the act did nothing to help the fox).I just still like to see dogs doing what they like best.

taking the hmr out tonight ,just fancy trying the dog on a few bunnies for a couple of hours, load of young ones about that will sit in the lamp.

thats me gents good night.

I've seen Ollie at work. He should join the X-Men with his super dog powers. At 8 months old he was tackling foxes and winning and he's got better at it as he's got older. he's like a dog possessed on the damned things, they don't stand a chance. He's also a good spotter with his nose. He'll scent a fox and let Mark know well before it's lamped. I think this last year Mark's shot more foxes that Ollie scented first that ones he lamped first. There's not too many rabbits got away from him either. The strange thing about him thou, however vicious he is with foxes and at killing rabbits, he'll deliver a pigeon to hand with a really soft mouth. And he wants to be everyones friend as well, he's not just for Mark.

I'm just pi ss ed off that he's Marks dog and not mine. If I didn't already have 3 labs, I'd have bitten his hand off for one of Ollie's pups.

Mark's not the freatest dog trainer in the world and I'd hazard a gues that much off ollies skill is bred into him and, therefore, into his pups. Anyone who's had one will have a cracking shooting partner rather than just a gundog.

Thanks davek.

He did a good job last night to say it was his first go.

had 2 3/4 grown young ones at the start that just sat tight.

weather helped, quite windy bit of rain.

Then we shot a few which he retrieved ok, but finding his last rabbit was getting harder,

i wanted him to finish on a winner as he had missed a couple that had extra gears and made it in the hedges.

Then we found a half grown one out in the middle of the field.

finished with a dozen or so,and called it a night.
