Pigeon Decoys

Recommended Posts

I like shells, as they add movement to the layout.

Full bodied can be made to rock, if you buy pegs with spring loaded tops (not cheap).

However, I prefer full bodied on "open" fields , like drillings.

Although I'm not sure if the pigeons can spot the difference.

If I could only buy one type, I would buy shells.

More important, is what they are made of.

Ignore the cheap, shiny, plasticky ones, some of these even tear easily.

Try to find the duller, "rubber" type, heavier plastic ones.

My own preference is for flock coated shells. For some time now I've been replacing all my old plastic decoys with flocked shells with a few fullbodied and some flyers/bouncers etc. Even use some on the magnet. They cost more but especially in sunny weather (which might be just around the corner) they out perform the plastics every time. And at the end of the day what's a little more cost on something that can last for years and give you some great performance. IMHO flocked are also just as good as dead birds and a lot less messy especially now the flies are out.

I would agree that flock coated decoys have a better finish than most plastics and I have a large selection of both.

However, anyone starting out, or buying on a budget will find flock coated decoys rather expensive.

Sometimes I only take my plastic shells and a couple of floaters when travelling light and this layout has accounted for a high number of pigeons.

I'm not conviced that the pigeons are as fussy as we think they are.
