stirky
Took the wife out for a meal last night to a country pub, i could not believe my eyes to see " wild roast woodpigeon" at £10 per bird. I had to ask for the manager simply to find out if it was popular and how much does he buy them for, and would he be interested in buying any more. He pays 50p each for them oven ready. !!!! Teal
What is the sauce? Gold?! This is a problem pheasant has had previously- it is however, becoming more and more like Salmon I think. Remember how a few years ago only posh people would have salmon, but these days it is cheaper than chips. Thing is woodpigeon is not available to many people and so I guess punters at these restaurants and pubs think it must be very special and fork out £10 for it. Game to eat has done a lot of good in this country, so full marks for the CA for this iniative and being proactive in getting supermarkets to supply game. Staffs-Shooter
still good if the public get a taste for woodies?
lurcherboy
Good luck to him. If the public are lead to believe it's 'expensive-rare' then good, it will sell. Lets face it, pigeon breast, marinated in red wine, vinegar, herbs, madras, for 12 hours, is mouth watering when fried in very hot Olive oil, and served rare. The best start for a shoot on a cold sunny Saturday morning. Thats after giving the old woman one first of course! LB
aubs
Salmon is cheaper now becuase it's farmed, wild salmon is still very expensive in comparison. I went to a pub/restaurant last week and they had locally shot wood pigeon with port wine sauce etc for £14.50. Although this may seem expensive the place had a michelin star and the food , service , situation ... prefect, everything was fantastic, and all produce was from local farms businesess etc. You get what you pay for and although my pocket doesn't stretch this far normally it was well worth the money. Cheers Aubs
digger
my brother in law owns a pub/resteraunt in wiltshire.the food is fantastic and game always features on the menu.the prices are steep but its the quality of the chef that keeps the place packed.he charges £9.50 for pan fried pigeon breasts,£15 for venison steaks and the price of game birds depends on the time of year. during the season he hosts seveal shoot lunches for the local estates and sources all his meat locally.good for him, good for the local economy and good for promoting healthy wild food.****** wont buy my pigeons or rabbits although i have bartered a few trout for beer. longnetter
I'm a bus driver and a few of my mates at the garage think I'm a cruel B%$&*$D for killing little animals, fish and birds etc, I tell them that I always eat whatever I kill! One of the lads who'a a bit camp to say the least, said 'Well, I just hope that you never knock down and kill an old lady, I'd just love to see you eat THAT! My reply? = 'Well Simon love, I can't imagine you eating anything remotely female, can YOU?' To be fair he did laugh, well it was more of a strangled giggle really, but there you go, each to his own, some more so than others! longnetter :( :*) :(
