Toombsy
Yes I do use bite alarms... two of them with Baitrunners and carp rigs. Life's too short to stare at rod tips for six hours between takes on the Trent, so I watch the wildlife instead and let the barbel hook themselves! hendersons
if i was being entirely honest i can't remember the last time i fished for barbel without using a bolt rig but i suppose i'm lucky in the fact that 90% of my barbel fishing is done by stalking so have never had to use a bite alarm for them nick

mick miller
It used as a dog feed, so try bulk pet foods outlets, maybe there's a Jollye's near you? Then you can get a bulk bag of hemp at the same time. I was serious about the baked beans though. You can use anything to bulk it up and make a cheap mix. A lot of hype goes into carp bait, but the plain truth is that they are lake pigs. Put enough trough in the right place and they'll have it, I could wax lyrical about the folk I have known that use the same pop-up for weeks between sessions. Just bob up and whack the manky looking number into a likely spot and they STILL catch. So you can use anything within reason to bulk up the vitalin; hemp yes, but you can also use chick peas, black eyed beans, wheat, barley, maize, sweetcorn, tares. The secret to preparation simply put is a generous boil time followed by a 24 hour soak. That's why I prefer cheap baked beans and frozen sweetcorn, you can mix it up on the spot with a kettle full of boiling LAKE water and get a good, cheap, sloppy spod mix without the faff. If you feel flush add a tin of condensed milk. Edited August 2, 2009 by mick miller
Smogs
hi i was just wondering if anyone new a good spodding mix or any tips on spodding ? Any bait tech product combined with some salt, tuna, spices..................suggest you watch or borrow any of the Korda Thinking Tackle DVD`s, Danny Fairbrass is very helpful in his explanations (once you`ve got past the obvious Korda slant) Braid & a leader for hitting those impossible ranges + the new Daiwa spodding reel ie excellent & very user friendly
jimthefish
hi. ive always had results on red band pigeon conditioner, this is a good base to add what you want i.e pelets, maples, boilies ,groundbait etc
jimthefish
one of the key things to acurate spodding is the line clip on your reel.fill the spod with water or stones if it has holes in,fire it out till you reach yor mark ,then clip your line up. hey presto acurate spodding.enjoy! activeviii
vitalin from most pet shops, its a dog feed finch feed, you only need a kg of a few differant mixtures as long as there very small feeds if you dont want to mess around with hemp the buy the stuff in the bottle. i cook up 10kg at a time and freeze it down frozen sweetcorn for tescos. while your there pick up a 1/2ltr of pure hemp oil, chilly flakes and a tin of tuna in oil. If your cooking up the hemp then save the juice and put it in the vitalin. the small seeds you can put in a pan of water, bring to the boil and then leave to stand. once cool it is ready. mix all the above together and use in spod. i never dump my mix but instead i take it home and freeze it so its ready for next time. PVA bags i buy for black cat baits at £9 per 100 for 5x3 machine made. been using them for years and at one stage i use to sell them on fleagay until every one found out and jumped on the wagon. best spod mix i have used though, bar none, is nothing more than sweetcorn, catering tins so its in juice and bloodwork from tackle shop. had some good fish on this, upto 37lb 12oz they band the bloodworm and jokers so i cant get the mix right any more. but then again my rods are rather dusted at the moment.
