scout
To cut a very long story ( some 2 years ) short. I have finally managed to get a neighbouring farmer on side. I have been shooting a small area of an out lying farm , only 30 odd acres which is some 8 miles from the main farm for a number of years. It is near a very small town / large village and has been poached in the past , causing quite a disturbance to the neighbours. Every time I go there, the neighbouring farmer comes over ranting and raving about poachers and his horses, which I fully empathise with, and after 10 minutes calming him down we always end up talking about shooting, ferreting and falconry. To say he is highly strung is an understatement. Recently he had the police with him and the farmer on the phone when he came storming across the fields, so again I unload my rifle, walked across to meet him. Shake his hand and call him by his first name, which I don't think is the response the police were expecting as they then apologised as he ( the excited neighbour) was obviously very much in the wrong. They left and where happy with the situation. Spoke to the farmer who I shoot for and he was happy so that just left the neighbour to deal with. Well. An hour later you would have thought we had known each other all our lives. We had met and chatted many times but he never remebered me the next time. Eventually I persuaded him to give me his phone number and I would ring him when I go out so he knows it's me and hopefully stop any more agro. I've been away for a couple of weeks and have agreed to go out with Shadowmag tonight, so rang the farmer all ok, and thought I better ring the neighbour. Gave him a ring, he remembered who I was, and amazingly asked me to shoot a couple of his fields tonight as well, and then the rest of the farm when he's harvested....... to say I was gob smacked. And as a bonus would like Shadowmag to ferret his stable area later in the year. Just shows that politeness and perserverance can eventually pay off. Just hope he remembers who I am when we get there tonight.
