Boromir
Come back from Wildfowling at 10pm went out for an hour and come back to find my Labrador is panting and shivering and also the guilty look like he's done something wrong. Now its not cold but I have turned the fire on for him. Shall I get the vet out?
smig4373
Yep..get him to the vet's...your hunch's are usually right when it comes to your own dog...if you think he's ill, take him..better safe than sorry.
apache
Give it 10 minutes and see if it settles down. If you are still worried give the vet a ring. Are you able to take the dogs temperature? Could he have eaten anything he shouldn't have either whilst out or in the house?
Boromir
Think I found out what it is he has a deep cut on his abdomin (spelling). He wont let me touch it, I think its penetrated the skin and think you can see the muscle I have just managed to clean it, the cut is deep and it about a cm long Edited September 1, 2009 by The BFG
apache
If it's just a skin wound it will wait until morning. The vast majority of vets wouldn't want to do anything about a cm cut at half midnight! Has he settled? Is there a chance it could be deeper and go into the abdomen? If so then it does become an emergency.

I was out with another man and his dog and mine both of the lead had a scrap, he didnt seem hurt or anything cause he walked back to the car which was half a mile away and was fine in the car. this is the cut, its from my cmara phone and its upside down sorry
apache
I see no picture................ If it was a bit of a scrap he'll be fine. Make an appointment with your vet in the morning. Might need a stitch or a staple and some antibiotics. No need to get anyone out of bed.

Yeah srry trying to upload the picture, You know how much it will cost for the vets?
apache
No idea. Will vary from practice to practice, also depends what he needs. A course of antibiotics is cheapest - if he needs an anaesthetic and stitches very much more! Not taking him is false economy - if it gets infected it will cost you far more in the long run! Spaniel
When my spaniel cut its side many years back the vets could not stich the wound, so they gave me some medical cleaning solution (Red stuff ) which i watered down and had to wash the wound down with daily to keep it clean. In the end the wound heeled it self and it was a nasty rip on his side. I think it was just a medical steriliser but the vets will be able to help you
Bleeh
You better take him in, I had a dog that ended up with a nasty abcess that I found, but never showed much discomfort intill it swelled to the size of a goldfball.

In future cuts like that are fine to wait till the following morning just keep clean though odds are the dog will do this for you, if you can see through the skin layer then odds are it will require a stitch or two. Though everyone will pounce on you asking about cost it is a valid one and certainly round us they will sting you very hard for out of hours calls so you do need to know when you need to go and when not to. Asking the internet experts will just get the just in case take it to the vet as its not their money. Your vet also appreciates a nights sleep genuine emergencies are one thing but those that aren't used to be a bug bear in my house as I grew up with a vet as a father. I had an out of hours emergency with two Jack russels and managed to blow £250 in an hour and the only treatment was two doses of steroids and a set of Xrays. Would have been far more and I would have lost one of them had I not decided that rather than leave them in a cage with 3 hour visits from the vet to lug them 100 miles to my dads. A difficult decision at the time and not just financial as i'd not been able to get the vet to understand quite what had happened to them. In your case a few stitches and a course of antibiotics shouldn't be too much especially if they can stitch it under local anasthetic

I did confess in my first introductory post to being a vet :( We do appreciate our sleep I will second that (not all vets are playing on forums @ 1am..........) I would like to add that there are substantial costs associated with providing a 24 hour emergency service and some of this is passed on to clients. If you divide the time I work and I'm on call I earn less money per hour than many shop assistants! I work over 80 hours per week.
Boromir
Well stayed up till 2:30am to reassure him and make sure he was alright. But the little ****** was playing dead when I woke up, he was feeling weak at first and was still shivering Took him to the vet they gave him jags Antibiotics and anti-inflamatry and some tablets for him. Didnt need stictching luckily. Also found that there was a punture wound on his ear but this wasnt hurting him. Asking about how much it would cost so I could bring the right amount of cash with me thats all. In the end it cost me just over £41. He my best wildfowling dog out for a couple of weeks I will have to see if my new one is up for the job on Saturday. I WAS OUT WILDFOWLING AND MY DOG WENT FOR THE SAME DUCK AS THIS OTHER DOG. OTHER DOG DIDNT LIKE IT AND THEY HAD A SCRAP MY DOG CAME OUT WORSE. I cannot go where my dog can go which means I have to let him off the lead. It was a fight that happened by accident and no one was at fault, I dont blame the other dog either. Im not even gonna reply to anything else anymore people just gonna keep on saying that its my fault and we end up going round in circles. I didnt need to say the story. I do not go wildfowling in a public area do I. I'll give more details of the event even more shall I. I was on my own at first and waiting for the ducks with my dog, half hour later I was joined by this other person and his dog, both dogs were off the lead and greeted eachother like dogs do a sniff here and there, they ignore eachother most of the night. I then shoot a duck tell my dog to go and retrieve but the other dog was quicker and stole it just before he could get but my dog still wanted it. Other dog didnt like it and they had fight. I pack up 15 minutes later and me and other person part, my dog seems fine and was walking fine. The car journey home he seems fine and normal I put him in the house and I go shopping. I come back an hour later to find my dog panting and shivering at first I thought it was cold that was making him shiver so put him in front of the fire, I didnt think it was anything to do with the fight. Then I typed in google why is my dog shivering and one came up as Bloat which says is the second biggest killer in dogs after cancer and then said how to detect this one being "dog usually has a solid abdomin" so I was feeling around the area and thats when I noticed the cut. Took him to the vets the next day and the vet said it was shock and she gave him Anti-biotics for the wounds. I know this stuff happens so I dont blame me or the other person or the dogs as it was an accident. The other guy didnt deliberately force this. Dog is now fine so the end.
