dan the gun
.270win any views on this calibre used as a deer and boar round?
Baldrick
Dan, In my eyes the .270 Win is the second-best calibre ever invented (the mighty .30-06 pips it to the post). I have a .270, a Sako 75 with an ASE Utra Jet-Z Compact fitted. It is an utter delight to shoot (ignore any ill-informed comments you may hear about spine-jarring recoil), and its performance is nothing short of astonishing. It is typically used with 140gr for taking fallow deer and reds, and I use it periodically for boar and Plains game with 140 or 150gr loads. I have avoided 130gr bullets, as they do cause quite pronounced damage to carcasses, and the 140gr bullets group most tightly in my Sako. You can go up to 180gr if you want to import specialist bullets from the USA, but you are firmly in the territory of the .30-06 at that weight. I bought the rifle second-hand for a few hundred quid, as the barrel had been shagged. I took advantage of this knackered barrel to try out some 90gr Sierra HPs for foxing, before I had it re-barrelled. It was quite literally a death-ray, like a turbocharged .243AI. The T3 Varmint is a cracking rifle, as you clearly know. You must be fitter than I am, to be able to point such a gun at a running boar! Harnser
I shot one for many ,many years and like baldrick I am a devotee of the .270 . AS baldrick says it wont knock you over with the recoil contary to common belief . I have read many threads on hear about the bone breaking recoil from this round ,either the authors have never shot this wonderful round or they are a bunch of woosies . I find the only draw back to this round is that it is just a trifle to much for the smaller deer ,and boy dont it half bark loudly at first light in woodland . If you are looking for a one gun stalking calibre then you wont go wrong with the mighty .270 . My own preferance at the moment is .308 . Harnser . maddog546
.270 awesome round,as commentted they have so much energy its unreal,I have fox on my ticket for the .270 should I not wish to return home for the .223,when you hit a fox with the .270 its like hitting him with a bus, only way! Mine too is moderated with a wilcat and that extra weight makes it a pleasure to shoot with so much so that I dont even register the recoil after the shot, which is the way it should be,concentration on bullet placement not what you are expecting the gun to do. Only downside is the price of the ammo, but there again I dont use cheap ammo.As yet I havent invested in reloading equipement but I think its only a matter of time in these financial times.
