Killjoy
Well arived home on saturday morning after an early start on the geese, and to my suprise my FAC license has arived throught the post.. Straight off to the gun shop and bought a Savage 17 HMR with a scope, cleaning kit, 200rnds Hornday 20grn bullets and straight home to mount the scope. Turns out to my massive disapointment, the gun shop had supplied me with the wrong god dam mounts for the scope, so now i have to go all the way back 60 mile round trip to change them, before i can mount the scope and try out my new baby. I chose the savage over the CZ in the end as i was reliably informed that although the CZ was of a better build quality than the savage, the savage had a much better trigger and barrel and would out shoot the CZ in the right hands every time, so i made the lunge and walked away very happy. Ohh, got 11 geese between the two of us, 2 unrecoverable unfortunatly and 9 grey lag in the bag..
al4x
why did you go for the 20g bullets?
Killjoy
The bloke in the gun shop told me to try them first, i did ask about getting a few brands to see what i felt shot well and he said that i didnt need to be doing that at this stage. Without knowing the facts for myself i just agreed, thinking he knows best? what do you think?
al4x
I think they tend to defeat a lot of the object of the HMR, basically because they're not ballistic tip they don't expand well and just make small holes in whatever you shoot at including foxes in one side out the other with a very small amount of trauma. Yes they kill but you usually get runners that need following up. With rabbits head shots do go down but with body shots its the same deal they lack the put down power the round was designed to have. Ill change for some polymer tip 17grm ones. Thanks again.
al4x
keep a box or so of the 20's back to try but you'll be surprised in the difference.
Killjoy
Ive had my mounts and have been out with the new 17grn bullets. WOW, balls the 20grn, 17grn polymer tips are the future!! I zeroed the gun to around 90 yards, now remember im only using a 9x mag scope and i can hardly see a 1" circle at that range, i was zeroing on a plastic electric tape bracket approx 1" wide by 2" tall (dont tell me mum - who's land it is by the way) which was fixed to a standard semi circle fence post. Now i know its not ideal but some numpty left the targets at home so i had to improvise. After around 20 shots, the rifle was accurate enough for my liking, the bullets were .17grn Winchester polymer tips. Just to test my new found accuracy, i lined up a 3ft plastic fence post which holds the electric tape, range was around 105 yards as it was just a little further out than the zeroing post, deep breath, exhale....... click, zap.... smash. and the bloody thing disintegrated, now i wasnt sure to be thrilled that i hit it exactly where i aimed, or ****** off as i didnt really expect to hit it and have to go and change it lol... All in all what a fantastic little calibre, im looking for a cheap .22lr now so i can get more shots down range for my money!!

Wholeheartedly agree; and the 20gr also seem to richochet too.
