Hi guys......I have a 7 year old Lab and lately I have been using him a lot on the barley fields near mine shooting pigeons, he was fine while he was out but after a rest he was a bit lame on one of his back legs, yesterday I took him to the vets and after a check over and a lot twisting and pulling his legs the vet said it was the first signs of hip problems. They gave him a injection and two weeks course of painkillers ,he is already on Synoquin capsules and what I am asking you lovely people is ( A ) is there any thing else I can do to help his quality of life and ( B ) how much exercise would be advisable ........... Thanks for your time reading this post......M M

We had the same with one of our GSDs from the age of two. Vet said if we kept her on a lead - she might last until 5. Hip replacements were not feasible as her knees had problems. We let her exercise off the lead - in fields with no other dogs - other than out own. She lasted until she was 9 - running off the lead, albeit slower. She seemed to know when she had done enough.
