henry d
Went out on a new bit of ground and tried a different tactic. I got there nice and early and managed to conceal myself in a low fence amongst the grasses and thistles looking towards the wood that should have a few youngsters to cull. Shortly after arriving the deer started to move out to feed, possibly due to the frosts we have been getting, and it was does with young that made the first moves. Just as it was getting dark I spotted a young buck at around 300+ yds and it looked to be a 4 pointer and was with an older doe and a young fawn and seemed to be fully grown. Only problem was it seemed to be going away from me Then an old buck with a great head jumped the fence into the field and was only 80-90yds away and he will make someone happy next year ! Scanning the field I saw the group of three were changing course and walking/browsing towards me as there was another buck near them and he also had a good head. I now thought that either they would walk into my scent trail and bolt or maybe they would miss it if they kept a bit closer to the wood, but this would depend on where the bigger buck was walking as he may push them away and into my scent. Fortunately the big lad moved in towards the wood again and the others didn`t see him and they continued moving nearer to me. I was just about to laser them when the buck stood stock still facing me. I knew he had got a whiff but hadn`t spotted me so I slowly got him in the range finder and he was 148 yds and had a low bank behind him. 5 minutes later he starts grazing again, the doe and kid hadn`t stopped, and eventually with the light almost gone he turns side on onto the sticks and squeeze ! He immediately runs at the shot and falls dead about 70 yds away. The shot took the top of his heart out and he was only running on adrenalin. He also turned out to be a lot older than I thought, 6 points and looks to be well past his best and "going back" his teeth were well worn too. Still a good buck to be removing given there are 2 other good looking lads there to pass on their genes next year. Sad bit is he may be my last buck this year

If he had got your scent at any stage he would have cleared the fields. He proberly noticed you but there eyes are not there best sense they have & as long you dont move you should be ok as you were. I see you have a 222 do you use Vit N133 i have a mate with a 1kg tub for sale £40 & i have no use for it but see it is good for 222/223 etc.

Yes, however the neighbours keep getting a shock when they see a buck hanging up in the garden
njc110381
Nice write up. You've been hitting a few recently haven't you. I get the same problem with hanging up my Deer. The mrs is a veggie too so when she gets home and there's one hanging in the Beech tree it doesn't go down all that well! Never mind, nothing's going to change so she's getting used to it slowly! It'll soon be time for the Does. Chances are when it is all the Does I've been seeing will disappear and all the Bucks I've been looking for will show up! Always the way! What do you do with your Deer? Game dealer them or pass them on to friends/land owners?
