Hello fella's

Awaiting receipt of my FAC so while my application is going through doing some research on what to get. Been having a look through some posts here but still a a newbie to the Rimfire world. I have been Clay pigeon shooting most weekends for about 14 years now and shoot every other weekend on some land I have access to on various crops for Pigeons/Rooks.

The farmer there has a massive problem with rabbits so I have applied for my FAC to help out. I have been out and had a few with the shotgun but its not ideal. I am in the military and have alot of Firearms experience and have had several air rifles in the past prior to joining the armed forces.

If anyone has any advise or recommendations for a good rimfire it would be much appreciated. My budget is around £600 but for the right setup I dont mind going £200 over. I was going to get a nice Gen1 NV scope for it also but after looking at the prices have decided to go for a decent day sight to begin with then get a nightsight in the future.

Quite new to the rifle side so I apolagise in advance for and silly questions. cheers guys.

I wouldn't change much about what I already have.

It's a CZ452 style with a SAK mod and Meopta 7x50 scope.

If I was buying a new outfit tomorrow I would get the 16" version (wasn't made when I got mine) and maybe the blue barrel instead of nickel.

That lot should set you back about £550-600, a sling and a brick of Eley or Winchester subs and you are ready to go.

Like Stuart, I use a CZ452 with a Meopta 7x50 and a SAK mod. I took his recommendation on Meopta scopes for rimfire use, and I also use them on some centrefires. My CZ is the walnut/blued 'American' model, and it shoots very well. I also have an Anschutz .22 with the same scope/mod set-up. My Anschutz is more accurate than the CZ, but the CZ is more workman-like and able to stand up to hard knocks.

If funds allow, buy yourself a scope-mounted Lightforce lamp, a Harris bipod and a Butler Creek stretchy sling. My .22s get fed either Eley HP subsonics or CCI Velocitors. Winchesters subsonics don't appear as consistent as Eley, but they pack a hefty punch.

I'll put another vote down for a CZ452. Get the 16" american which is already screwcut (£275ish), and put a SAK mod on it (£30). Then buy a good scope like a Leupold 3-9x50 (maybe £200). Add £100 for bits and pieces, mounts, cleaning kit, gun slip, ammo. You're about right on your £600. Maybe another £100 on a good lamping kit if you need it and want to spend your money. That should see you sorted for most situations.

I have a CZ452 in .17hmr. It's plenty good enough for me and will group under a penny coin at 100 yards. The .22 should be under a 2p at that range, which is plenty good enough for anything but serious target shooting. :birthday:

Never be worried about buying 2nd hand with a rimmy, as the soft lead bullets used will 'never' wear a barrel out. Just do a general check on the condition - slight scratches/general wear is OK, whereas chewed screws should make you pause and think....

I'd go for a Sako finfire if you can get your hands on one, or an Anschutz - the reason being that these two makes have the better triggers and are normally more accurate.

Having said that CZ/Brno have plenty of fans out there - build quality is very good for the price and triggers are a lot better than they were - the safety can be stiff and fiddly, but it depends what you have to spend.

Beware the cost of extra magazines - lose one and you had better get your hanky out!

Go for a one-piece scope mount as they are more rigid than two-piece. Nothing will naff you off more than to slightly knock your gun and find that the scope has moved. Sometimes you will need to do a little filing to make sure that the empty cases are not obstructed by a one-piece mount.

As others have said, get a decent moderator, and to make things really simple fit a bipod such as a Harris.

For most bolt actions you will probably find that Eley subs are the most accurate. Winchesters run them a close 2nd, but they tend to be that little bit noisier as the velocity is slightly higher.

Good luck!
