  1. The picture on the right is the sleeve that the piston goes into.
  2. I bought from eBay Tinbum tuning parts for a HW80, fitted these parts as per instructions quote ( TbT kits are designed to be used in place of factory power washers, spring guides and top hats where fitted) Quote (The slip washer is installed into the piston first, if you have made a sleeve the slip washer will hold it in place. Use a small amount of suitable airgun grease on the piston rod and the machined face of the washer. The top hat goes in next with a small amount of grease where it is in contact with the spring. After putting the (lightly greased) spring in, put a smear of grease on the shaft of the spring guide and insert into spring. Reassemble the gun and check power) These instructions clearly state that Tinbum parts are to replace existing parts, at no point is there mention that some guns may have different working parts, I fitted as instructed and found the gun refused to cock and naturally assumed my new spring was the cause, so removed it and shortened it, but still the gun would not cock, after re-examining my parts and then Tinbum parts I found that the spring guide supplied was the cause of the gun not cocking, the spring guide supplied was the wrong fitment because it fitted over the piston skirt, but not as the original which when the gun is cocked slides within the piston, the Tinbum guide sitting on top of the piston skirt increased the length of the piston therefore the gun could not cock. I contacted Mr Stanning and explained the issue; Mr Stanning asked me to measure my piston, measure from the skirt to the end of the rod, this I did and it measured 25mm, Mr Stanning said the one I have here in front of me measures 30mm so your piston rod has been shortened at some point to increase power, I explained the factory fitted spring guide fits within the piston when the gun cocks not on the outside of the piston, Mr Stanning said he would make another spring guide but reduce the skirt in depth to leave only a 1mm skirt on it to sit on the piston skirt. I thanked Mr Stanning and a couple of days later the new spring guide arrived, I fitted it but I have to say I was not impressed and felt this will not work, but anyway put the gun back together and took it out to try it, after the 5th shot the gun refused to cock, took it apart again the spring guide refused to come out so I had to push it out with a screw driver, the top hat was now in bits, then I examined my piston which now has a 18mm long gouge in it and the same gouge on the inside of the piston sleeve, obviously this damage was caused because the spring guide did not keep the piston level as the original would being inside the piston, My spring was not abnormal having carefully fashioned it as to shop bought manor. I have since checked another supplier of these polypropylene parts and he makes the correct spring guide which fits as the original does. The moral of this is don’t believe what you read if it is different it is wrong pour and simple. I would have put this down to experience and left it at that until I read this. Using these part s end result damage to my gun and out of pocket, Spring/ P/P Reply by tbt-airgun-tuning (19-Jul-15 08:47): Buyers! 3. Took the Gamo back and came home with a secondhand HW80, which has been neglected, not a problem had it striped down in half an hour, barrel already blued again, needs good tune up so off to gun shop Monday to get parts.
  4. I had checked this rifle out on the net, I also found a YouTube doing a live shoot with this gun at various targets, which was impressive, I had no real reason to doubt the guns credentials until out in the field. I will be returning it tomorrow first thing. I have had a few air rifles over the years my last was the HW77, but that was a good few years ago now, it is only recently I decided to buy an air gun again.
  5. Gamo CFX Royal I bought the Gamo CFX Royal, well this gun is as far from royal as it could get, and it is dramatically over priced at £240, however it looks the business but what is it they say!! Looks can be deceiving, and that is just what this gun is deceiving, the fore sight is made of cheap tin type metal and mounted on a plastic shroud that doubles as the housing for the under lever, which also has plastic fittings, this barrel shroud is held onto the barrel by a single screw, a very cheap affair altogether and will obviously fail in no time. Well I loaded this thing up and fired, it almost shook it’s self to bits and the noise it made cleared the whole wood of wildlife, Ah but it needs time to bed in I hear you saying, so after half a box of slugs and recovering from shell shock I gave up on the idea of using this gun it is quite simply horrible a nastier peace of kit I’ve yet to use.
  6. Thank you gemini52 for a good constructive comment, also thanks too Matt, and all who made comment
  7. It is yes, Gamo do have a good pedigree can’t really dispute that, but not having had any dealings with them, and thinking I had heard somewhere they were ****, I had always given them a wide birth, but now after seeing the quality and then finding out the weapon was a Gamo I have a completely new outlook on them.
  8. Yes I know what you mean, but having said that both have generally good reviews. Going to look at both tomorrow, depends on the day what I bring home.
  9. Going to buy a new air rifle, it’s between the Gamo CFX Royal and the HW99s, I’ve owned Hw before so Know there good, But the gamo I have to say looks impressive and reviews seem good , just woundering what you guys reckon.
  10. Thank you thats the answer we were looking for, I'll tell him
  11. I had a BSA Mercury and I have to say I wasn’t impressed with it, it was heavy and badly balanced, I actually only kept it for a short while.
  12. My mate has a HW 80 22 cal, he would like to get a silencer for it, but he has been offered a 177 barrel from another HW80, can he just fit this barrel to his 22 body. I’m no authority on air weapons but I thought putting a 177 barrel on a 22 body would push his power levels over, if it did fit. woulds appreciate your help chaps
  13. Got the sight rail off using a piece of scrap wood and a club hammer, one squirt of w40 two clouts with club hammer and it fell out and no damage. Oh and no need to take the trigger to bits. I have to say I'm not impressed with the piston carrier lumpy thing
  14. I can actually lift the trigger out of the way of the piston, so it must be the sight rail holding it now, although it looks like the piston is shaped to pass the rail, it must be that it only allows the piston to pass so far while being used.
  15. Thanks for your diagram, what I did is us an old witworth socket , got my angle grinder with a grinder stone in it and basically cut deep enough into the socket widening the cut as I went. Now fits a treat.
  16. Thanks for all your advice people much appreciated believe me.Ok I finally got the spring out, after allot of fafin about, what confused me was in the past when I have removed main springs I had never come across the metal bung they now install in the Lightning, after removing this well within seconds the spring was out, I don’t think this lighting has ever been opened before, the spring is bent and the condition inside the housing is black sticky muck. My next question is? Is it possible to get the spring carrier out without taking the trigger mechanism apart? If not what is the best sequence to dismantle the trigger.
  17. Evening people new on this part of the forums, I need some advice please. I was just about given a BSA Lighting but it needs sorting out, I have owned over the years quite a few air weapons and always maintained them myself, so I striped this lighting down and am now ready to remove the main spring, am I correct is it just a case of compressing the bung at the rear of the main tube and then punch out the large pin that cross’s the tube, on guns I’ve done in the past this was the case, any help much appreciated .
  18. I quite agree with you my shooting mate and I were talking about this only yesterday, the fact that you don’t see anyone during the winter, now suddenly there all coming out the wood work , but it has been noted by the farmer this year, he told us he is going to get rid of quite a few of them this year.
  19. A local farmer to me put out a request for help over his rape being hit, I arrived with my mates we walked the whole place to get an idea of what we were up against, well I have to say none of have ever seen a messier farm, there were spent cartridge cases pretty much everywhere we walked along with wrappers well you name it. We gave up picking up the rubbish there was just too much of it. We presented the farmer with what we had picked up he wasn’t the slightest bit fazed. That’ll be the foreigners we didn’t go back.
  20. I have had Suzuki SJ410 and SJ1300 both these cars would go anywhere but were horrible to drive any distance; I had the Vitara again horrible to drive any distance, I tried the vauxhaul sport 2ltr a much better car by far and put together better. But by far the best 4x4s in my opinion are Landrover, the Range Rover has been in production for years and they got it right had 4 of those, you get the best of both worlds comfort and the off road, I now have a Discovery diesel and i have to say it is by far the best 4x4 I have ever had, 3 years of on off road driving and it has never missed a beat, parts are cheap and they are easy to work on, and you can pick up a nice one with the money you have to spend.
  21. I know what your saying but other commitments didn’t allow for an early start, the tactics used that day have been used many times before with more often than not a good outcome, can’t get it right everytime
  22. Fair do's but we did see them feeding the day before that's why we set up at that time.
  23. The drilling of barley was done a few woodys seemed to be getting interested, so myself and one of my shooting mates decided we would give it a look the next day, we got to the field around 10.30 thinking was if they were feeding early then we would catch them in the afternoon, out with the bino’s and yes there were a few still on the field and others dropping in, we decided to leave it alone until later that afternoon. We returned at about 3pm and set up there were still woodys floating about here and there, so we settled and waited, and waited and when we thought we had waited enough we waited some more and waited, we had the grand total of 3 shots and two kills. On our way out of the field we bumped into another of our shooting mates, he had set up further over the estate and had the same results, he told us of a chap he knows who shoots another estate not that many miles away from us, and he is shooting 50 and 60 bags on a regular basis, and the estate grows the same crops ?????.
