Well as per my previous post, has anyone actually reported failure due to NOT using snap caps? Seems a lot of people are quick to suggest using them but not any of them are as quick to suggest why it's so important, i.e. are you actually protecting your gun at all? If not and then considering the other reasons suggested as to why NOT to use them (below) then maybe they are an issue? Anyway, the choice is yours, personally i'd rather spend £6 of a bottle of red.
-The practice of pulling the trigger in an enclosed space should not be promoted.
-The spring tension is only partially released after 'dry firing'.
-After 'dry firing' you then put tension back on to the ejector springs.
for £6 id rather have the snap caps, even if its for nothing more than dry firing the gun to practice.
one of my friends broke the firing pin in his mossberg 500 a few years ago, the guy that fixed it told him that closing the breach on an empty chamber contributed to it (along with standing in front of a mirror and dry firing on an empty chamber....) so ever since that i use snap caps.
maybe it is useless, who knows, all i know is that the guy that fixed my mates gun knew a hell of a lot more about guns than me or my mate did (being a gunsmith), so if hed said to stuff a pair of the girlfreinds pants into the chamber to help the gun we probably would

might open a can of worms by saying this, but....
everyone needs to keep their dogs on a lead and under control when they have them out walking in public. doesnt matter if its a jack russell or a mastiff.
first im going to say i have full sympathy for anyone who's dog has been attacked, if one of my dogs was injured like that, mr mossberg or mr benelli would probably be on the scene in a heart beat. but some of the replies here have got my blood up a bit.
i have two rottweilers at the moment, but myself and my family have had a range of dogs (bred most of them, also some of the family have judged at crufts), the breeds include pekingese, miniature german schnauzers, irish terriers, labradors, springers, corgis, pyrranese mountain dogs and more, so im not a thick headed rottweiler owning "thug" or chav as some people might try to say. it was actually my ex who wanted a rottweiler, i just fell in love with the breed once i got her one.
now dont get me wrong, theres plenty of idiots out there with dogs that can be "dangerous" in certain situations (hate that term as its the owners that are the danger, not the dog), meaning the dogs are strong/powerful, in fact last time i had a litter of rottie pups i gave half of them away for free to people i knew were sensible, some of the idiots that came looking to buy one of my dogs.... well lets just say i wouldnt trust them with a teddy bear
BUT ive been involved in a couple of situations with irresponsible owners in my local forest park. some people think their little springer or lab wouldnt harm a fly and doesnt need to be kept on a lead. ********. my dogs have been attacked 3 times by other dogs not kept under control; admittedly being rottweilers they have come out of every attack on top and without a mark, but that doesnt mean it should be allowed to happen. would you accept having a gun stuck in your face as long as you werent shot?? i doubt it.
anyway, now as soon as i see another dog thats not on a lead i come to a dead stop and hold my dog close - and this WILL annoy some people, but there is NO way am i going to turn him away so some mongrel can hit him from behind. if your dog isnt under control and attacks mine it deserves its neck snapped, and i make no apologies for that. most people react with outrage at the fact that i have a rottweiler, and as such it has inconvenienced them by having to put their dog on a lead so that it doesnt charge at my dog and be on the receving end of 9 stones worth of doggy self defence. at the start i used to try and talk sense to these people, explain that my dogs were under control, fully licenced, microchipped, insured, and that they were in the wrong, not me. but after the 20th time i got a verbal bashing i decided id had enough, now i just say sweetly to people "would you like to put your dog on a lead or do you intend to save me the hassle of having to feed arnie today??"
not good for my image probably, but im sick of RESPONSIBLE owners like myself being lumped with the idiots - it feels the same as when us RESPONSIBLE shooters are lumped together with those gun toting hoodie gangs.
so as i said before, theres no such thing as a dangerous dog, only stupid and irresponsible owners.

Save me dosh and get 12 ltr of asda cider then
stag
with 12 litres of cider you wouldnt need a range finder, in fact id be surprised if you could still see straight!

hmmm. i bought a mossberg 500a a couple of weeks ago and im very impressed with it. picked up a 2nd hand one in near mint condition for £200, paid an extra £70 for a black synthetic forend and a black synthetic butt with a pistol grip - and now everyone that sees it wants a shot!
having said that thats not why i bought it, theyre a good solid gun, plenty of extras available for them and they cycle all loads without a problem (unlike my benelli semi, which hates 28 gram 7.5s). only thing id say is if youre buying one get the a model with a top rib and bead sight, some of them come with rifle sights, the rear sight folds flat so you can use the front sight like the bead on a normal shotgun but i find the ribs better; plus the 500a comes with chokes (or the ability to fit chokes) unlike some of the slugster models.

look on ebay, can get them for £2!!!
i got one a couple of years ago, theyre useful but you need to know the height of an object (to sight in on) at the range youre trying to measure. i dont use it much anymore but thats more to do with the fact i dont need a range finder much than anything else!!
for £2 you might as well try it....

hmmm, my benelli cost £245 and the mossberg about the same, so id buy those then spend the rest on drink and hookers (no drugs thanx!!!)

oh oh oh ruger 10/22!!!!!
you can have a proper target rifle or a mini assault rifle.... like this!
seriousley tho, ive used a few types of .22 rifle and the 10/22 was the one i was most impressed with. admittedly straight out of the box its just an ok rifle, nothing special, but the thing i like most is the versatility. once you know what you want the rifle for you can get it set up exactly the way you want, new barrels, new mags, new stocks, new triggers, in fact its possible to build a ruger 10/22 without using any ruger made parts!
sorry im probably biased towards them, but thats my 2 cents....

ah damn ive had that happen a few times; ive seen me WALKING over a mile with 300 shells strapped to my back to get into a hide for a "100% guaranteed amazing day"... and firing only 8 shots. seen other days when ive been lazy and gone out light with only the ammo belt (25 shells) and ive fired the lot within 20 minutes!!
at least you had a good day anyway!!
-
in this situation i always think "what would I like to get??", that might help you!
then again buying a spas 15 or a barrett light 50 for the kids might not be such a great idea....

hmmm how many times are we gonna get this one....

yep, still have scars somewhere!!

trying not to make jokes about guns being smuggled across the border... lol!!
im not sure of the process mate but i see alot of southerners out at mcclures (tannyoky guns and ammo, near poyntzpass, co armagh), my local gun shop. last night i was there a guy from wicklow or somewhere was picking up a new deer rifle from them, so give them a shout; pm me if you need the phone number

snap caps, ive heard of people using empty cartridges before but too risky incase you slip in a live one!!

im a bit late, but...
on my mossberg i load the mag, chamber a round by racking the slide, then pop another into the magto top it up.
only time i have to press the button is if the guns already cocked

hi im new to this forum but i have been shooting for 8 years. im going on a trip to canada in a few weeks to see family im taking my mossberg 500a with me and wonder if i will be able to shoot slugs through the standard barrel? i know that you can get a slug barrel for them but i dont realy want to get one just for a 3 week trip.
p.s my knowledge on slugs is very limited do they come in different powder weights like normal bird shells?
pps great forum, this place is a real gold mine of infomation for uk shooters.
thanks adam.
ive got a 500 a, it handles slugs and buck shot like a dream; only thing i find is im a bit more cautious about twigs and debris getting stuck in the barrel than with normal shot, but thats just me

babbyc please tell me why you think those pitchers were rong
thank you
ok, im not having a go here, not looking a row, im just pointing that out first, 'kay?
i have two problems with them. firstly, and mainly, this site is a public forum as far as im aware. even if its not i wouldnt be surprised if some god forsaken anti (or several) were users here to try and get dirt on us shooters. thats the kind of pic those "********" would love to get their hands on, i can see the head lines in the papers now, and can imagine all the "pressure groups" jumping on the band wagon. when im posting i always try to be mindful of what i say, big brother has eyes and ears everywhere, and just because you dont live in the uk doesnt mean those pics cant be twisted to be used against us. they would love to have pics like that to ay kids are being given guns to play with when their young, no wonder we have so much gun crime - even though your pics are there to show that youre teaching your kids to respect guns!!
secondly, and this is just my own personal opinion, but i think your daughter looks a bit young to have a gun in her hand. dont get me wrong, when i was 3 i found my dads .45 smith and wesson personal protection revolver; i can remember knowing i wasnt allowed to touch it and that something bad would happen if i did (then again a few month before that his old walther had gone off, hitting him in the stomach, problem with the safety, so it may be related to that). BUT, and this is the most important thing, if YOU think she's old enough to learn about guns and appreciate how dangerous they can be, then you have my full support - as i said it was my opinion and only goin by the pic; i dont know how old your daughter is or how mature she is, and i applaud you for being the type of parent who doesnt hide things from their kids so they find out from the wrong people.

Can any dog be a gun dog (within reason!)
in Dogs and Dog Training
Posted
i have two rottweilers and take them shooting, the bitch isnt great but the dog showed good signs - chasing game up, retrieving, even sitting down when i shouted "fire" so he didnt get in my line of sight when after rabbits. id only started his training when i broke my ankle, and shortly after i recovered i moved back to the town from the countryside, so never had the time or space to try and finish his training, but i sometimes wonder how he would have turned out.
