  1. I dont think the countryfile crew are too keen on killing fluffy wuffy animals adam still thinks chops come from tescos .

Not a real farmer IMHO just been blessed with being able to take on the tenacy of his old mans .

Sure its great to get kids intrested in farms but very few open farms want to teach the real facts of farming life EG things die and also animails are slaughtered for our consumption.

    Cheers OTH

  2. So, i have noticed a poor season for most so far with very small bags. I wonder who has got 'food decoying' in their minds. I reckon it could be

the next big thing. ****** this standing round all day having the mickey taken. Food decoy in the winter and in the summer just revert to normal

procedure. I spoke to a farmer and he said its no different to bird decoying as long as you get rid of pigeons as that is the name of the game. My farmer is losing mountains of rape and i cant help him as i cant get a look in. I end up just looking for flightlines. If it is against the rules then im just gonna go back to clay in the winter and look forward to the harvest each year.

But whos going to pay for the wheat etc you would need a good two tonnes broadcasted over a field it would then probley become a volly in the crop the farmer is growing which inturn would cost to spray it out.

Its sound a nice plan but the cost time and the ethics down stand unless your going foot the bill of the twon tonnes of wheat which is today £348 per tonne :hmm:

  3. All i can say is some places have very few but some places have loads and like most things that eat young trees and cause crop damage they need controling we have thousands of them around us and shooting them 2 or 3 days in 1 year which we do makes very little diference really but needs doing to thin them a wee bit . was on the same land today walking around and still saw 15 in 1 of the fields we did yesterday . you may not like it but controlling them this way is the only real way to do it .

sorry OTH but need to say my bit back :good:

Totally agree Tom population numbers vary some much.

Hows the pigs going still on target for 500 in five days.

  4. I have just completed a felling job just outside of small village near silverstone .

Its too far to haul the timber back to my barn storage so I am offering it for free to any PW member who can collect its in 3 mts lengths still green.

You would either need to hiab onto a truck or chainsaw it up for your own usage.

You will be in charge of your own health and safety nor me or the Landowner will be responsable for any injuries or losses etc.

PM quickly if you want it as last time I posted I had spare timber it was gone within mins.

Roughly 4 tonnes of quality beech and bit of ash.

    Cheers OTH

  5. OTH,

My apologies to you, your thread, not intending to 'knock'.

Just a personal comment which, agreed, I should have sent personally, I admit to not being fully aware of that 'protocol'.

    Thanks

Thats OK like all things in our sport numbers is a contentous image I have recevied numerous PMs from angry members at the amount I shoot and catch.

To kill that amount of hares it would seem a very over populated area dont forgot just like rabbits they graze and in that number even over a large area they will be causing some major crop and tree damage.

    All the very best OTH

  6. Tom,

Thats a hell of a lot of hares - there aren't many here in Cheshire so, rather than shooting them hows about trapping some next year and giving the cheshire countryside a boost?

I dont think I could shoot hares to that extent.

I have to say it worries me that anyone can.

Unless you drove the whole county and had 100 guns,

I'm sorry but wherever, whatever, it seems excessive.

I say that from the perspective of a shooter who rarely sees a hare and for whom 'puss' has always been a special quarry.

Perhaps I'm too fanciful these days, but your post saddens me.

    Cheers

Please dont use my post to knock Toms hare bag number if you has a issue then PM him direct .

It saddens me you have to use this thread for that purpose.

I respect your views on the subject just not the place for the it to be aired.

    Cheers OTH

  7. A very strange day with high winds but working in a tee shirt at the start of feb go old british weather probley snow next week.

Still on the same ground and moping up the odds of the site some very steep bank on to a main road so had to be careful with dog and ferts.

And the first real dig of the season still no sign of young here either nests or the does .

A good morning for only a few hours as we had to be back home early .

  8. Our scooby legacy twin turbo is up for grabs a jap import with 98k no history but you can see had a easy life.

I will post pictures tommorrow taxed till end of may and MOTed till sept 2011.

Couple issues lacquer above the windsceen showing the rocker cover gasket on the OS does leaking causing a slight smell of oil some times very rarely.

I know the CV will need doing on the OSF driveshaft in the end as its does click on full lock.

It still drives superbly and is one the quickest A to B cars and I have owned some quick cars cossies and M5s etc so I know this would pee all over them on the B roads.

I was looking for a grand ONO .

    Just PM any questions OTH

  9. I stumbled on it last year locally after selling my VFR the bloke owned for 7 years and hated the riding style his was very tall.

But could not part with in but knew he had too in the end,I bought it as a stop gap love it but cant justify two bikes .

If I cant get the £1500 I will keep it as I dont need the cash and I think its a rare clean bike in great colours.

And still cuts the mustard not only in speed handling market but you still get other bikers come over to have a look and comment on it.

    Cheers OTH

  10. Our first real night at the woodies roosting had a go last night and managed 23 but got to woods early tonight setup the whirlty and deeks on a well know flightline into the woods along a strip of ash trees.

The wind was howling from right to left not ideal for this thin strip of woods ,I set out my deeks along with some lofters boy you then notice how little 20 yards is upwards on a large oak not even upto the main canopy of the tree.

But still I always find it does give better picture to birds incoming to woods, and along with the deeks under the woods it tends to funnel them into you a bit more .

The birds where still dropping to deeks at a 4.45pm the birds where whistling pass enough to give driven grouse a run for there money.

Some shots I pulled off involed mega lead some dropped way behind me which despite Merlin reaching 13 in two weeks he still managed to hike after them and pick them like he was a puppy .

Hope you boys had fun as well cheers OTH

View from my hide over the deeks on the old stubble under the wood.

    Roosting5thfeb2011001.jpg

The lofters where being blow all over the shop.

    Roosting5thfeb2011002.jpg

    Trusty and getting old Merlin

    Roosting5thfeb2011006.jpg

Maybe old but still manages a spirt off speed at times

    Roosting5thfeb2011004.jpg

And my final bag of 29 the old chap knocked another 21

  11. Finshed with 23 hard work but out of the decoying tommorrow and then roosting again the birds in our area keep shifting roosting woods for night to night at the moment.

I would say it was too windy for productive shooting decoying and even roosting.

A couple of trees came down bring my time in woods .

    Keep you boys updated OTH

  12. That man has probably done for for promoting and introducing young lads into shooting than you could ever dream of doing. Just because he has different views to you and he airs them quite freely it doesnt make him a 'confused old twit'

When you have written a heap of books and written a weekly article in the shooting times for as long as he has, as well as introduced generations of young lads into shooting then i might respect your opinion.... until then, your a ***! :P

Agree with that GeorgeH I have diffrent views in all aspects of life some agree with me other dont I have put up with be verbally attacked on my opinions on subjects.

I have heard of Mr Humphreys and read and enjoyed his books his views maybe strong on subjects .

Thats whats makes the world go round the same as in our own little worlds.

    Cheers OTH

  13. well done yet again, your immense at rabbiting with ferrets :good:

    Cheers :good:

Its all about rabbit numbers if you not got alot on your ground in first place your struggle to get good bags but we are bleessed with high numbers making good bags more possable than it is for others .

    Cheers OTH

  14. So I am right in thinking then that you can bait woodies so long as there causing damage to said crop already you could not bait feed a fallow field or stubble.

I not sure if the farmer would be too happy us spreading some wheat over his OSR fields to improve our bags :hmm: .

    Cheers OTH

  15. Are you doing it at night or during ferretting,if at night then roughly 10 yards out futher if there alot of twigs of trees in the hedgeline.

Also when at the end set it so you got a little dog leg either end to funnel the rabbits that try and go round the net ends.

    Cheers OTH

  16. Good work.

    Needs more pictures!

Wish I had time with only two of us working one either side of the hedge I cant man ferts rabbits and camera.

I tend to be focused on catching and killing the rabbits cleanly rather than taken pictures .

There is some times when we have enough hands that I can take a less ative role in the days action.

    Cheers OTH
