  1. your right m8 they wont be encountered in in england, but even in oz , which is as vast as canada i still wouldnt shoot a rifle in the air. look , i seem to be the unluckiest $%^7 in the world and even 100 miles from the nearest tarmac road, i had visions of firing the 6.5 at a cat and it passing through the cat, then travelling god knows how far and hitting the only bloke for three hundred miles!!!! who had just stopped for a pee . i know nttf flock is an experienced shooter and thats why i said its his call, but the main point on this forum, which is host to a great many not so experienced shots, and a few antis, is that in the main, you should not shoot a rifle in the air. cheers dan.
  2. nttf/ firstly it is not illegal to use a shotgun with heavy letter shot against an animal in australia. secondly , wild boar often weigh in excess of 250pounds and are much heavier armoured than a mountain cat and can assure you that shot such as sg or even ssg are very capable on boars. i rarely shot solids as they cause too much meat damage and the commercial chiller companies wouldnt take them. firing a solid, weighing in excess of 300 grains would have been as irresponsible as firing a rimfire skyward let alone a centre fire. if you so chose to hunt large species from trees then its your call . ive never hunted in canada so i bow to your experience, just saying i wouldnt do it. no offence meant or taken, dan
  3. i believe its more than possible to harvest the species you mention wiyh the shotty rather than a rifle. when boar shooting in thick scrub i often used then winchester 1400 semi auto shotgun with sg,s . and when the dog treed a cat it got an ounce of them up the clacker. if an ounce of sg,s will take a large boar at close range then im sure it would adequately deal with any species at bay in a tree. still cant see the need to shoot a rifle at a creature in a tree./
  4. happy birthday brian. hope youve got some embarrasing tales to tell about sat night? or did you go home at ten pm ******, full of curry farts and tales of your 168yd rabbit with the? hmr. and mrs sussex lad said "if you think your gettin in this bed youve got another thing coming"
  5. If the spent ammo is landing on the shooters permission then he is not using a trunk as a back stop. NTTF i shot many a feral cat in oz that my dog had treed. but always with the shot gun. i was never tempted to do it with the 6.5 even though i allways had it in the truck. and i was often shooting 100miles from the nearest tarmac road, thing is that there isnt a cat , rabbit ,,fox ,magpie, squirrel ,crow or pheasant that is worth injuring or killing another person for. unless you can see where the round is going to end up then dont pull the trigger : :look:
  6. ok ok smartarses we,ll see how clever ten pints of harveys makes you feel later. and im taking my camera now so wear clean undies. :*) :*)
  7. hi axe im off to chris potter guns in east grinstead today so will catch up with you in lewes on the way back but thanks for the offer. look forward to meeting you all. dan
  8. Excellent choice Dan , the best of luck with it. What make of rifle were you thinking of? open to suggestions frank but the remmy varminter is a proven shooter .so il see what they have available
  9. yes nick your right. he was handloading 32grn bergers. i too like to see an exit . so its the 223 for me.
  10. im with you blackhat. very disappointed. only one stall with rifles on it and they wernt for sale and no where to buy ammo. did get a thingy for cutting cucumber into curly bits so it was worth the entry fee .
  11. Hi Dan, I had a .204 Ruger in a Ruger MKII M77 walnut stocked for 6 months. I found in very hard to get groups below 2 inches with the 40 grain v.max stuff in factory. I then was told the 32 grain ammo groups better in a 1 in 12 rifle, which most .204s are. So i got a box or 2 of the 32 grainers and tryd them out. The groups shrank to around an inch not bad i thought and the first opertunity i got i took it out after foxes. Shot 6 that evening, 4 had to be shot twice as on inspection the 32s exploded on impact, not penatrating the vitals. Cleaning the thing, was a right pain, it fouled bad and like the .17 rem attracted copper like a magnet. I eventually got fed up with trying to keep it and myself happy, so swaped it for a hard earned CZ .223 . Never looked back since. Bags of different cheap ammo to choose from, accurate with most types of factory ammo, easy on the barrel and easy to clean. What more do you need? The .223 will do everything a .204 will do, but do it better and much more cheaper. Now saying all this, if your into reloading, you may find an ultimate load for it, but personally, i cant be botherd with all the hassel, too complicated for me. Why bother, when the .223 is so much more easy to please and fun to have. Hope that helps a bit. thanks a lot frank. ive heard two similar stories to yours also. i was 50/50 with the 204 and 223 then went to the kent game fair on sunday and a gunmaker from ashford called alan ,on the basc stall ,showed me a group from his rifle at 100yds and the the three shot group was virtually a one holer. he was adamant that the 204 was capable of 1/2 groups at 100yds with factory ammo. so i was leaning toward the 204 but i think youve well and truly swayed it. sussex lad has a 223 ar15 and he loves it so ill look round for one, now im addicted to foxing i think the 6.5 is just too much gun for them. well thats the official reason to princess hummer thanks dan
