  1. I got some and some .223 fmj bullets off fleabay, Set them up with modified case etc etc, best results was 10 thou off the lans and 59 grains of v v 140 (30-06) got 4inch group at 100 yards. Took me half a tub of powder to get that good. .22 rimfire is a lot more accurate. It will drive em quick though with hardly any recoil, pity they could'nt make em more accurate or easier to load.instead of trial and error, nosler balistic tips are still the best.
  2. you can buy slugs 12g or .410g on Ebay, that can't be legal? can it ? my sons 410 is full on both barrels, would'nt like to say what would happen if you used them in it , Probably a trip to casualty.
  3. 30.06 everytime for me, kicks like a mule , will stop anything, am now using 120 grain noslers and shoots very flat, think the 150's made less mess belive it or not. It will shoot inch and a half groups at 200 and inch high at 100 and would'nt shoot at 300 but if i did it would be about 6-12 inches low. 120 grain nosler balistic tip. Exit hole on a large roe is two inches with 120's inch and a half with 150's . I don't eat the ribs so it's no loss, they go down like a lead ballon. 270 is more popular and shoots flatter, most of my mates have em, but they can't hit anything i could'nt, same with 25-06, they still kick hard. some say the 30-06 knocks em down hard because of the width of the bullet and makes less mess than you may think, I don't know. I like military calibres thats why I have it , it has been around for a while, suppose anything over 243 will do the same job, in the right hands. gona put a t8 on it soon though.
  4. OH no you don't want to cut it up or do anything to it, leave it as god intended, trigger is gritty as are all of them even at, the lightest setting, use eley subs and it will give you no trouble use winchesters and you'd better carry a knife or grow your finger nails, heard that the quad barrels are match grade barrels and that is why the rifle lands are machined so close , (explains why they are so accurate too), put thousands of rounds through mine and it is still the most accurate rifile I have ever owned, and I've owned a few ( a few mingers too), burris scope is a joke , my mate bought 1 and even with all the colour coded nonscence they do not return to perfect zero everytime, so what is the point , grit your teeth hide your next months credit card statement from the wife and by a hungarian 8x56 SB and be done with it , nobody would buy a burris scope before what makes people think an air rifile scope is going to do it now. In all honesty once you put the 17 hmr barrel on you will never use the .22 again anyway, they really are a lot of gun for the money. cz's look like fenceposts perform like fenceposts , fencepost would be more accurate, taks it out of the sleeve evryone says had one of them , take a quad out of the sleeve evevryone says "what is that"
  5. what did chuck hanks or hawkins or whatever his name is say ; it's not the calibre of the rifle that counts it's the calibre of the man using it. from 222 to a rigby it makes no difference, shot placement and accurate rangefinding are crittical, it's good banter arguing about calibres etc but sometimes you have to get out there and shoot it, if it's a 243 or bigger and you are up to the job then you have no worries.
  6. yeah yeah think you are all missing the point, if you go out lamping bunnies with a 22 rimmy using subsonics, and you see a fox at 80 yards and you have 2 cz's, 1x .22 and 1x .17 you have the chance for a go at the fox with the .17 without having to change barrels etc, etc, I would not have a go at a fox with anything less than a 222 but that is my opnion and I am entitled to it, my point being that 2x cz's may be a more versatile package for some people. The sak moderator is no use for the .17hmr I compared both before I parted with any money, and if you are serious about the job you need the ase, ask, jackson rifiles, A+D supplies, myself, the three keepers I know, we all have them.
  7. Hi all ,just got the .17 barrel for my sako quad, very impresive, only one thing, by the time I bought it , an extra barrel, scope, mounts, 2 moderators, ase ultra for the 17 ( they really do work well ) and a sak for .22, bipod , sling etc etc. I am a bit scared to count up how much it all cost, if anybody is thinking about a quad and more than one barrel, they should maybee think twice, a couple of cz's, 2 hawke scopes and mounts and share the sak moderator between both calibres and you are away and none of this re zeroing **** either, the sak moderator still works on the 17 not as good but you still get the sonic boom whatever one you buy, I have heard that the cz's are very good value for money , and a lot of people swear by them, somebody in my position should do there sums first, ( MY WIFE IS GONA KILL ME), saying that I would still buy the quad as the 17 will print half inch groups at 100 yards ( yes yes using a bipod and monopod ), and I don't think the cz would ? ( gona regret saying that probably), either way I'm not looking for an argument , It's just a heads up ..... p.s. those targets that go green round the bullet holes are the cats pyjamas, 17 bullet holes are very small ,,saved me miles of walking. a1
  8. pity you could'nt try both (sako quad etc) .22 magnum's are very effective, had one couple of years ago, and they are hard hitting wee things, a bit noisey though, something you should really try yourself before you form an opnion, saying that by the time you buy ,try ,decide it's ok but you fancy a .17 , trade it in for one ,you have lost as lot of money, think your rfd is right though. 017hmr's are the in thing at the moment, though wind drift is supposed to be a problem, and with the weight of the bullet you can see why, I am bad enough at guessing range without having to factor in wind speed, everybody says 17's have a big grin factor, which you cannot ignore.
  9. THANKS for the reply , at least I know I am not alone, so by what you have said all I have to send back is the barrel, not the whole gun as I am getting the .17hmr barrel next week and I can send the 22 barrel back , thanks again ,calum
  10. .223 every time , had them both, still got the 223 and a 222-50, 222's go like stink are very flat , no stopping power though, why do the military use 223 (nato 5.56 )(there more or less the same), so any partly trained sqaddie can pick one up and it will shoot flat, a 308 (7.62) might stop an elephant but it's got a trajectory like a rainbow, in the right (trained sniper with a rangefinder and sniper turrets) hands they are as accurate as anything, 223's are the best not too noisy they shoot flat, have good stopping power,I never use my 222.50 any more even with the silencer it makes a hell of a racket and kicks too. 222 was all the rage 15 years ago they deserve there place in history, they are phasing them out at some stage, don't listen to all this twists and bullet grain nonscence but a tikka or cz 223 off the shelf , stick a decent glass on it and you are away
  11. HI all, got a sako quad about a month ago, only got the .22 rimmy barrel at the moment ,the .17 is on order, love it to bits, the most accurate rimmy I have ever used, I am a rubbish shot but even I can put 5 shots through the same hole at 50 meters, only problem is it will not eject spent or unspent winchester subsonics, cci's and nodel are ok most of the time, have tried everything, more oil less ,oil cleaned it , left it dirty , put about 1500 rounds through it now and it is no better, any ideas ?, think I am alone on this one as the dealer has sold 12 with no problems, think I will send the barrel back when I get the .17 barrel, any help or ideas would be great ....
