  1. Well done ,dont worry about missing more than you get ,the more you go the better you should get.

I will be as bold to offer a little advise, looking at the back of your hide you have some lovely natural cover in which build a hide, you would do better to take advantage of this if possible or at least add some vegitation to break up the net a bit, as I think someone has already mentioned if that outer net is one that is brown on the other side it would be better to have that side facing out.

  2. Well perhaps I was a little hasty posting that there were no pigeon showing on my rape stubble, decided to go have another look later this afternoon and although there were very few on the field there was the odd one and the odd one or two floating about.

So I thought since I had nothing better to do I would give it a crack.

Got set up by about 2pm with the hide bang in the middle of the field, and 15 shells just stuck out on top of the stubble,I dont usually like to use plastic decoys prefering to use dead birds, but as it was a last min decision to go I had no time to thaw some out.

I was most supprised when within a minute of getting in the hide one came straight into the pattern giving me a easy shot and a bird to put on the new turbo flapper for its first test.

The birds came fairly regular after that and they decoyed very well ,the turbo flapper certainly seemed to work as on a couple of occasions I had birds hovering over it.

I shot till 5pm ending up with 34 and 2 lost for a very respectable 44 shots, seems that I am at last starting to get a bit more consistent with the 391 auto.

  3. let the fields build up with pigeons, then go have a go at them.i will try in 5 days time now its been cut.

unfortunately that is not a option for me as I can be pretty certain that if I left it 5 days it would be shot by somebody else <_<

  4. After waiting in anticipation for weeks , the only rape on my small permission has now been harvested , its been done 3 days now and as yet I have not seen a pigeon on it or over it  .

So it looks like my one glimmer of hope for some decent shooting this year has gone out of the window ,which I must say is quite depressing

  5. I have been on the hunt for any permission in West Hampshire for over a year now and am yet to find anything, letter drops, knocks on doors nothing! I have decoys and hide setup all shinny and new and nowhere to use it all. Grrr

    Sorry just needed to rant

I know the feeling mate been much the same for me ,try as I might cant get anything,I used to have loads but unfortunatley money talks these days

  6. I'm using super points I think there called super field points and found that they have best auccrucy so far but I'm going to try your suggestions mounts are tight I'll have another good look round rifle and look for owt ovious thanks

Could be well worth cleaning the barrel if its not been done for years as you say ,make sure you remove any oil with a clean bit of cloth on the pull through though, also you say you are using a pointed pellet,I would be amazed if they are the most accurate in your gun as it is a fact pointed are never as good accuracy wise as domed or flat head.

  7. people like her and every other drug takin muppet deserve all they get [its the family that dont take drugs that are left to pick up the pieces]there are far far too many people in this world that pass before thier time threw no fault what so ever of thier own .

yes i have a jaded/bias out look on this as my 16 year old daughter got out of my car and collapsed and died and she had never been a pick of trouble in her all too short life [died threw lupus].

these muppits who live life for drugs and die because of them get NO SYMPATHY from me as they took the choice to take drugs knowing what may be the conciquence and then you have the all to many people like my daughter who never had a choice

I am sorry you lost your daughter must have been a tough time for you,but I do have to ask if you would feel the same if her death was caused by drugs or drink ? would you have thought she was a muppet who deserved it ? I think not.

there are 100s of kids who die each year through addiction to drugs not low lifes as some like to call them but once decent kids brought up by decent hard working families , it only takes one mistake and you can end up hooked ,its so easy for kids tody tho access drugs especialy if like her they have money ,no doubt a dealers dream ( the real lowlife).

We all like to think our children would never end up like that because we are bringing them up "right" no doubt MR Winehouse thought he had brought Amy up right and his little girl would not become a drug addict,no doubt he loved his daughter as you loved yours.

I wonder how many people who have posted these "she deserved" it type posts on various forums ,youtube etc will have there remarks bite them in the backside in times to come.

  8. I had my eye on a lovely 20 guage o/u at the local dealers one day i wanted to buy it, next I thought I had better not, then I thought I would again,in the end I decided against it as as though I loved it I did not really need it and thought as I am not exactly on this years rich list I would be better saving my money a decision fully backed by her in doors.

Imagine the look of horror on my face when two days later she floats in with the "lovely new curtains" she had just paid £400 for .

I though right time for revenge off I went to the gun shop only to find it had been sold :o :o

  9. "You dont always need a big bag"

Well thats just as well Tom as mine consisted of one with the airgun under my favourite tree today  I like you can always shoot a few there because the pigeon love it and as you say I dont bother with decoys as I can always get some to start making a pattern never shot huge bags there but when I give it a go with the shotgun it almost always results in a bag of 20-40 its a 2 min walk out of the back of my house too which is a bonus , I do like to limit how often I shoot it to once every few months though.

  10. That isn't the case. If you know your ground and are fairly sure that birds will arrive, it can often pay dividends to stay put. I shot 80 odd on drilled barley this year but had to wait almost 3 hours for the birds to switch on.

If however, birds are piling onto another area of the field - or different field altogether - it makes sense to move if you can.

Ageed a few years ago I was set up on a field I knew there had been lots of pigeon on a few days before sat there from about 9 till around 2 and had about 3 shots I then shot 97 in the next hour and a half I have had bigger bags but I have never had pigeons come in as fast or decoy so well since it was impossible at times to reload quick enough

  11. I bought a new lightweight 101 in the mid 80's, cost £400. A nice gun but do to weight it didn;t like anything more than 28gram cartridges. Sold it about 12 years ago for £380. Just watch the barrels, they are chrome lined and I remember the chrome had just started to lift at the choke end.

Yes thats mine went to the great gunshop in the sky a great big bit of chrome complete with some steel lifted halfway along the top barrel

  12. It happens mate , got out for a few hour this afternoon and only shot 12 tho some of that was my fault as my shooting was bad

Funny how somedays if you point the gun anywhere near them they just fall out of the sky yet another you cant hit hardly a thing , I put it down to me not going as often as I would like, but you cant use that excuse Tom

  13. After my success last week I decided to pay the same feild of rape a visit today, had a look yesterday and still a good few floating about.

Got there today ,hide up dead birds out gun at the ready the dog looking very keen at my side :good:

3 hours later 1 bored pigeon shooter 1 even more bored dog not a pigeon to be seen so looks like its back to my barren times

  14. Hi all. I'm about to acquire my first shotgun, my certificate should arrive in about 4 weeks, I already have a Firearms License. My initial activities with the shotgun will be bunnys and clays, really looking forward to it.

I visited my local RFD this morning to discuss a moderately priced (£800) second hand gun and he handed me a Winchester 101 lightweight, fixed choke 28 inch. Lovely gun, felt very nice. I'm new to shotguns so I'd appreciate some opinions on the gun please. Does lightweight determine that it's a ladies or youths gun? Would this be a good first gun for me or are there better recommendations? I'm 57, reasonably fit, 6 feet tall.

Any and all advice much appreciated. Thanks.

To answer your original question the lightweight is a full size adult gun with some lighter weight materials in places to reduce the overall weight of the gun all the major companys make lightweight guns beretta ultralight etc.

  15. As much as I love Winchester 101's,£800 is too much for a lightweight(though 101 prices are creeping up again)Even an XTR couldn't command that sort of money unless it was a Pigeon/Diamond grade with exceptional wood.

Have a gander on guntrader .co.uk and gunstar .co.uk to get an idea of 101 prices. You will also see what other options are available to you regards shotguns. If the Winchester feels comfortable, you may find Browning/Miroku likewise.Shop around, there are 1000's of second-hand guns out there so don't rush into a purchase or let anyone push you into a purchase.

Beretta are also a very good make, and any of the latter 3 will hold their re-sale value and are more desirable than the 101 from a re-sale point of view(though I wouldn't turn down a good Grand European!)

If possible, take someone with experience with you and pick a gun which comes to the shoulder/cheek nicely, and learn to shoot with it with the help of a good coach.Alternatively, find a good coach and take him/her with you when you go shopping.Enjoy yourself. :good:

You sort of give conflicting advise there.

You say the price of 101s are creeping up but then say beretta will have a better resale value,in theory if what you say is true if you buy the winchester at the right price you will make money if you look after it.

I totaly agree though that £800 is too much I brought a 101 xtr lightweight multichoke in a private sale a few years back for £300,fantastic guns though. for £800 I would have a look at a brand new Lanber whic are pretty much a beretta in disguise now days :good:

  18. I used to have mice in my flat that were immune to traps.

I couldnt bait them with anything that the mice were

interested in so I had to resort to shooting them as they

ran over the carpet in the hall.

    Great fun!

  19. I had a year working for a stone mason when I first left school in 1806  the portland stone was very easy to work with compared to say granite, marble would carve easily too but is much more prone to chipping,by the way it looks like you are already a far better mason than I would have ever made hence the career change :good:
