  1. Hello, I collect antique reloading tools and I could be persuaded to part with a few. If you PM me your email address I will send photos.
  2. Thanks. Hadn't realised it linked to elsewhere. If it was double I'd have gone for it.
  3. I was wondering if anyone has seen any proper reviews of gun safes. There are many on the market and although all should be to British Standard it is obvious that some will be better than others. Before I invest in a new cabinet I'd be interested in the pros and cons of the various makes and the safety and appropriateness of the various locking systems. I like the idea of digital and biometric but are they actually safe if you'll pardon the pun
  4. Hello, I'm expecting to receive my FAC this week and will hopefully be using two HW60Js in .17HMR and .22 next weekend. Obviously this will be my first ammunition purchase. What would you recommend for these rifles? Rabbit control is the aim of the game. In one area I can get close and have to minimise noise (nearby horses) and I am told that there are very low power .22 rounds which would be ideal. But I also have heard that these have a loopy trajectory and a high tendency to ricochet. Do members have experience of this? I expect to buy three hundred of each calibre. What varieties should I try? Many thanks

    FAC AIR RIFLE

I know what you mean. There's something very nice about a good air rifle. Hard to explain really.

    FAC AIR RIFLE

I have a slot on ticket for an FAC air rifle and I am interested in acquiring one in the coming weeks. My thoughts are that it should be a buddy bottle powered rifle with quick fill facility and pressure gauge. It must be .22 and must have right handed or ambidextrous stock. Ideally I want it to come with scope and moderator. It must be in excellent condition and not fooled around with. Bipod already attached would be a bonus. It should be around 30 ft lbs and regulated. Transfer through face to face rather than RFD transfer preferred. I like to see before I buy. My guess is that the following would meet my requirement: Theoben Rapid Mark 2 Air Ranger Air Wolf BSA R2 Mark 2 Do members have any of these gathering dust? I live in the North East but travel to Staffordshire and Surrey regularly for work. Many thanks for your help and feel free to make suggestions of other rifles that would meet my criteria.
  10. In 1994 I was in the gun shop in Blandford and aiming to buy a Webley and Scott 700. I had a choice of two. The one I bought and the one that Jack Hargreaves' widow had put in for sale. I didn't take it because I wanted straight hand stock and his was semi pistol grip. What a fool I was. Imagine having J Hargreaves' side x side in the cabinet.
  11. Hello. I'm interested in the Idleback. Can you please PM me if its still for sale.
  12. Is the cabinet still for sale?
  13. Funnily enough a friend told me earlier this week that there are large numbers just off the M62 near Manchester. He was stuck in traffic and watched them hammering the fields near the motorway. If its any consolation my last 3 days out have resulted in: 1 feral 3 woodies 2 jackdaws 2 Woodies This isn't due to poor shooting. This was all that came to the pattern. In fairness I was able to drive to the hide so there was little physical struggling. Despite these poor days I am undeterred. Its the bad days that make me really appreciate the good ones.
  14. One I bought at a gamefair looks remarkably similar. Its a sturdy well made piece of kit which gives me confidence. However it does not beat anything like as fast as the AA decoys variant which is similarly priced and comes with timer. I have found it does work well with corvids as the slower wing beat appears more appropriate. That said I have had pigeons, crows and to my surprise even ducks come in within a foot of the AA flapper. I recommend the AA turboflapper and a friend who saw it in action immediately ordered from the same company.
  15. Hi, I'm not far from Scotch corner. We do have a fair number of stock doves up here. They will be around 10% of what comes to the decoys hence its very important that they are recognised and not assumed to be a "young woody". I'm happy now that the feral pigeons we shoot actually are feral pigeons and not Rock doves as we are well outside their range. Unless of course they drift across with the gulls.......
  16. Further to my last does this mean that anything that looks like the bird in the link is a feral if its not in the geographic areas listed by Cranfield? In other words if its in a stubble field or a barn in N Yorkshire its feral and fair game?
  17. http://www.rspb.org.uk/wildlife/birdguide/name/r/rockdove/index.aspx Many thanks Guys. I think I'm pretty sure of the stock dove these days although I have seen people mistake them for a young woody and have enlightened a number of otherwise very responsible shooters. The real issue for me is illustrated by the link. Is it a Rock Dove (protected) or a Feral (not protected. RSPB appear to suggest that it is both.
  18. Wise words. Yesterday I had a superb hide and a superb pattern. In the wrong county.
  19. Chaps, I can tell the difference between a stock dove and a woodpigeon. But having studied a lot of photos I am left with the feeling that the Rock Dove or Blue Rock could easily be mistaken for a feral. Am I right or am I missing something? Thanks
  20. I don't think that pigeons operate with the same "flock" mentality that corvids do. A flock of pigeons doesn't strike me as being a cohesive body but more an aggregation of individual birds for a finite period. I may be wrong. Obviously crows are different. I hid on a barley stubble about 35 years ago to see what happens when a flock of crows (probably rooks on reflection) moves from field to field. This was in Co Antrim. A team of 5 arrived on the field where I was hidden. One hovered centrally while the other 4 moved to the field corners and inspected the area. When satisfied that there were no obvious dangers, on a signal from the central crow, one by one the corner birds landed. When all 4 were on the ground and nothing untoward happened the central crow called to the flock. The scouts rose again and circled the field as the flock arrived and landed. Sentry birds were rotated for the period while the birds were on that field. This clearly demonstrated a well developed C3 system. Command, Control and Communications. Now if the corvids can develop a system of that sophistication perhaps the pigeons will eventually do so. Problem with this theory is that first they need a cohesive flock and that flock needs a leader. Just can't see it with pigeons in all honesty.
  21. Just to finish this one off I was so impressed with the AA kit I ordered more yesterday. It arrived today!
  22. A few young mallard lighted in to my pattern yesterday evening. They seemed to be attracted by the flapper, landing right beside it. Is this a common occurrence?

    ROOKS

gentlemen, Is it wrong to shoot rooks? Do they do more good than harm? Is it better to leave rooks and jackdaws be, while taking every opportunity to kill carrion and grey crows? These questions are in response to threads I have read elsewhere and it has caused me to question my activities. Your opinions would be appreciated. CB
