  1. Suzuki's are excellent off road. On the last day of the season I embarassed a so called expert in his disco! As he sunk up to his axles I ploughed on through in my Grand Vitara.

Out of interest he claimed a disco 2 has automatic diff lock. I thought he was talking **** but is this true?

  2. We are looking at options for game cover on our syndicate shoot. Someone has suggested we sow maize and then broadcast millet into the seed bed. Apparently this will provide warmth in the maize and low level feed.

Does anyone have any experience of doing this or anything similar?

The shoot is in the North East of England on some fairly heavy soil. Any idea if maize and millet are suited to this climate / soil?

    Thanks

  3. I have to say that I would and have used them. I often use a 28 bore for shooting pigeons and have 19 and 21 gram loads of 6's.

The energy will be the same, you just won't have the pattern density so your kill rate may go down. I have not really noticed any difference using my 28, if you hit them they die.

    If you miss you miss.

This is quite a revalation. Only a few weeks ago you were saying you use nothing else other than 32 grams no.6! Now then 19 or 21 grams of 6 will certainly have far less pellets in than my favorite 28gram no.7.5!

  4. Stupid question for the day:

I have taken a browning 425 12G O/U, but not fired it yet. I have just noticed that with snap caps in it will only fire one barrel - either top or bottom depending on which is selected. Without going out and frightening the neighbours by firing off some cartridges I want to find out if the recoil from a cartridge is needed to make the second barrel live, or is there something wrong with it? I will find out soon enough but it is really bugging me. Anyone have a quick answer?

They have a recoil activated second shot. If you give the stock a good smack with your hand it should reset it.

  5. After our first season on a new shoot we have all sat down and decided what went well and what didnt.

Firstly the land is criss crossed with fairly overgrown hedges which are very tall and great for driving partridge over. However the bottoms of the hedges lack cover. What can we use to thicken out the hedge bottoms with permanatly? I have been looking for fern seed or bramble seed but cannot find any on the internet and am not sure if this would anger the farmer or not.

Secondly the cover crops failed to hold birds in any quantity. What is the difference between normal rape and fodder rape and have people had good results with fodder rape as a cover crop?

Thirdly there is a patch of overgrown ground which we would like to use for a drive. Would planting rhodedendrons in their help hold brids? If so does anyone have any experience of buying these the costs and how many you need for an area around 50 square metres?

    Thanks for any help.

P.S. The land is in North Yorkshire so is fairly wet with heavy soil that likes to cling to boots.

  6. I decided to do a bit of roost shooting this afternoon with the .410 and some 2.5" no.6 cartridges. I had shot 3 birds when I was suddenly confronted by a fox walking past about 20 yards away. I did not fire because I only had the .410 but it got me thinking would it do the job or not? The gun has no choke in either barrel. In the end I got 7 pigeon for 10 shots which I dont think is bad for roosting!

  7. Its a tower shoot. I know someone who has seen one of these and someone is sitting up a tower in the woods infront of the guns. They literally throw birds off the tower and then they fly over the "guns". The guns are surrounding the tower so there is no safe escape. Not sport in my opinion! I commented on a video like this on youtube a while ago and the guy had the cheek to say it was more sporting than the way we do things over here because all we do is walk them up and shoot them in the back at ten yards! I soon put him straight the dumb idiot.

  8. This is what you need for the bore pitting in a 410 http://www.enginehones.com/11m240sc.html Your belgian proof marks are in metric so the maximum amount of oversize is 8 thousanths of an inch if the proofmark measurments were imperial then it is 10 thou , About the bluing the metal must be mega clean the finer finish you give the bare metal the better the final outcome but beware of buffing wheels they can remove some serious metal without you knowing about it so if you remove 3 thou from the bore and then 10 thou from the outside you have seriously weakened the barrels so take care , in the uk one of these flexhones cost's over £50-00 but in the US they are under $12-00.

Thanks for the advice Andy H!

Was thinking of using wet and dry working up to fine grades.

Any idea about the best cold blue kit to use?

  9. I recently bought an old Belgian .410 sxs hammer gun as a bit of a project. The gun gas bluing which is fairly worn on the barrels as well as some light pitting in the right hand barrel. My question is has anyone used a cold blue kit to re-blue an entire barrel set? If so what kit? What preparation did you do? What were the results like?

As for the pitting is there any way of polishing this out safely? I was thinking valve grinding paste and a lap. Has anyone any experience of this or would it be dangerous? I know if you go over 10 thousands of an inch increase in bore diameter it needs re-proofing.

    Thanks for any help
