  1. I know its an addiction as my Father tried to give up for 5yrs and I helped him as much as I could as I wanted him to give it up more than he did. He failed but at least he tried. By ignorant, I mean don't care or bothered where they smoke or light up or where it is or who is there or affected. I also think 25yrs of serious passive smoking in the house I was brought up in doesn't mean I've never smoked. I cant stand in that persons shoes and actually feel their addiction but I think I'm in a position to judge as in my family there have been 3 heroin addicts and a few alcoholics and unfortunately I could see what they couldn't. I work every day with a very good friend of mine who I'm helping to quit cigarettes but he is smoking e-cigs inside at his desk and then going outside for a real cigarette: Has anybody any suggestions?
  2. I just find smokers ignorant, they don't care when or where they smoke as long as they can. I see everyday young mothers with children in the back of their cars puffing away driving, what's that all about? A few months ago they finally stopped the smoking outside the door of my local Hospital. When you see several people sitting in wheelchairs and drips in their arms smoking as if there was no tomorrow it doesn't send a good message. I've had tradesmen in my house who think they have the right to light a cigarette when they feel like it regardless of anything. Guns and guests at my shoot get in my car and want to light up as they are been driven to the next stand 3mins away and look at me with two heads when I tell them NO! I've been a non smoker all my life ( Or was I?) I was brought up a miners son and my parents smoked like lums and so did their entire family, so until the age of 25 I suffered a house full of cigarette smoke every day so I think I've had my fair share. I'm glad I've lived this long to see the effects of smoking as my Parents and 95% of family died of smoking related illness. We've came a long way in the past few years and I think it would be a backward step to allow people to use e-cigs in hospitals, restaurants ETC. I would hate to go out for a meal and 50 people in the same place puffing away on e-cigs.
  3. Glad he never died drinking Wine !
  4. The question was = What can a SBS do ---- that an O/U cant ? The only things I can think of are you can see two sight planes on a SbS An O/U cant do this. A SbS should recoil the same on both barrels but an O/U can never do this. Thanks to everyone who replied always interesting to hear different points of view
  5. You get lightweight O/U just over 6lbs but light guns are = Quick to start and Quick to stop and a recoil issue.
  6. You get O/U with 2 triggers the same as you get sxs with one. I was thinking more along the lines does it fire faster, can you load it faster, does it handle better, is the point ability better, more pleasing to the eye, balance better ETC. As for high Pheasant my brother has shot a sxs all his life and I shoot O/U he shoots them at the same height I do but that's more to do with the cartridge, choke combination and the most important thing of them all-- The man behind the gun!
  7. What can a SBS do ---- that an O/U cant ?
  8. What shotgun was invented first SBS or the O/U
  9. Enjoy SBSs for what they are but don't get stuck in "Time !
  10. I've had 5 Berettas and cant fault any of them. I have the A400 Unico just now with all the kick off system but I still think the Maxus has less recoil and the speed loading is brilliant but the Beretta fits me better also I bought a Maxus camo a year ago and it cost £1050 brand new my Beretta in camo is £2000 so I would stick with the Maxus. A few of my friends shoot with the SX3 and I've never heard any of them say a bad word about the gun.
  11. My brother who is a SBS man has a AYA Yeoman and has shot with it all his life to the extend that there is no blueing left on the barrels and thousands of cartridges have been fired through it and it has never let him down it was his first gun and he's coming 60. I had an AYA No 2 for 15yrs before moving onto O/U It had stunning wood and with the right cartridge a joy to shoot and never let me down either. You will not go wrong with an AYA.
  12. Don't buy a half or full trained dog. Buy a good pedigree pup and train it to what you want the dog to do. Rather than buy a dog someone has trained to what they think it should do. As it grows its character will develop with your character. Get professional advice if you cant train it yourself etc. Most shooters are Lab or Spaniels, I've had Labs all my life and know very little about Spaniels. My dogs are kept outside but are let into the house every day for a few hours. The bottom line is have you the time and energy to train and walk a dog every single day, can you physically do it and most dogs live to be 10yrs old or more.
  13. I have a Beretta Unico 3.5" with the kick off system. I have worn out the recoil pad which is Comfortech Micro pore type material in less than 700 cartridges shooting with a moleskin shirt on. I took it back to where I bought and they said I'm not the first. I then sent it to GMK and they advised me to buy a different one. Has anyone else came across this Problem
  14. This is 15yrs ago. I had just bought two brand new nets and a set of four really expensive poles. All day in the hide I had shot around 130 pigeons with my Lab going out the right side where I had a big gap for him and retrieving every one. The last pigeon I shot came in wide to my left I shot it and the Lab went straight through the centre of the net taking the nets and 4 poles with him out to 30yds tumbling and rumbling. Two nets were ripped to bits Two poles broken in two ,One bent and one ok. It was a good lesson as my two Labs in the hide now just sit or lie down until I tell them to go.
  15. Go to Scotland in December for a weeks holiday and pick your own.
  16. I have a Benelli sbe, Maxus camo and a Beretta A400 unico with the kick off system. They all have different strengths, I tend to use the Beretta the most although I like the speed loading of The Maxus and I also think it has the least recoil of the three. Any top of the line Semi new or second hand with an all weather stock would be fine and make sure it fits you. The right cartridge, choke combination to suit where you are shooting and away you go.
  17. Thanks to everyone excellent photos and vid. Now I know when I see the wad at 10mtrs the shot has long gone!
  18. Would anybody out there know what distance from the end of the barrels with a plastic wad that lead shot completely leaves the wad and the same for fibre?
  19. They both sound like they will be very good especially the older one. I made some Rhubarb for the first time the other day anybody out there made any? You should definitely make the smoked gin it was really smooth after 1 year lovely smell and taste cant wait until its 3yrs old as it will be ten times better.
  20. In windy conditions I tie a cord to the top of the hide pole stretch it out front and tent peg it or if it comes from your back a cord off the fence or tree etc. I have straight poles with no step and I hammer a long chisel in the ground down 18" and put the pole in when very windy and it works . The best thing I've found for bending hide poles and ripping nets is a 32kg Lab!
  21. A wok, put in a big jar of french whole grain mustard add two pints of the best double cream, season, put in two jointed rabbits,Bring to the boil and turn down to the lowest heat it should bubble like a Volcano. Leave alone for 2hrs. Delicious . Ive cooked rabbit a lot this way very simple and a sauce to die for. Its a Keith Floyd recipe, he cooked it in a wheel barrow full of hot charcoal.
  22. You could use a big tin, a dustbin, old fridges. I use oak sawdust in a oven tray and I have a smoke generator as well. Try and keep as much smoke contained if you can. The smoker I built myself is just a big box with sliding ventilators to control the amount of smoke. I don't know about a few hrs as this was the first time Ive tried it, I put them in with some Salmon I was smoking for 12hrs. It might well be that it only takes an hour but I don't honestly know and I can't find a recipe for it. Maybe liquid smoke in the demi might achieve the same thing.
  23. I have a cold smoker where I smoke Salmon etc, You can buy a Bradley smoker which you can smoke hot or cold I have a digital one which is excellent. Iffy, Ive said this before, you make 3 demi johns leave for a year and filter, make one more demi and filter than in 1 yr and make another one. the first ones you made drink one each year and once you drink the 3rd one all the rest after that will be 3years old.
  24. Recipy Cold smoke half a demijohn of ripe sloes in oak for 8/12hrs 3/4quarters of a bag of sugar in the demi Add all the sloes ( put them in the freezer the night before and they will burst when thawing, saves you pricking them) Top up with quality gin Leave for 1 year in a dark place, strain and put through coffee filters If you can leave it for a further 2yrs and it will be nectar Ive never made smoked sloe gin and I couldn't find a recipe for it. Now I've tasted it Ill leave it for 2 more years and see what the difference is but it is well worth doing.
