  1. But do you get enough extra loads out of them to justify the price compared to say Privi cases? After 5-10 reloads any case no matter the make is going to be weakened by the firing and resizing. You shouldn't really wait till the neck splits before you bin them.

In my case yes, it is very much worth the extra.

Having said that all my rifles are custom/semi custom built so only get the best fodder.

  2. Thanks chaps for the quick reply.

So Trained Hunter status if that awarded by the DSC1?

    Lee

You don't have to do DSC1 just to get your trained hunter cert.

You can do the Lantra Level 2 Cert in Game Meat Hygiene, this covers both large and small game.

  3. Whats a good bullet for both fox/muntjac? I Was going to use the 55gr ballistic tips for foxing as have been told these and flat shooting and devastating on fox

85gn Sierra Gameking is a perfect allrounder in the .243Win for Fox/Munty/Roe.

If you do decide to go for a different bullet for Fox then I would look at 75gn VMax...bucks the wind better than the 55gn and

is flat enough for any lamping ranges.

You won't have any problems with Northants FEOs geting .243 for fox and deer.

  4. Just remember though that mag feed with a BR can be very tricky. I have a 22 BR and although it drives tacks, those little cases are fiddly in the field and dont feed reliably in my gun. They may work better in a remmy or clone but I dont know. I would certainly do the build on a remington action as you will have all the choice of stocks trigers and barrels in the world. I have just sent one of mine off to be re barrelled into a 260 Rem. I like remingtons, elegant engineering simplicity. That is why it is the most copied action although I dont deny the copies are built to tighter tolerances.

Fister is spot on regarding the mag feeding. Mine will mag feed 'most' of the time, but I always now use it as a single shot rifle. (After all you only need one shot....).

Fister, I had a Sako M591 .308Win rebarrelled to .260Rem and it is absolutely my favourite stalking caliber! A very good round to load and shoot.

  5. I seem to remember my donor rifle started off life as a .243Win.

I found the donor rifle and bought it for under £250, the existing barrel was shot out.

Had it re barrelled with a Border Cut barrel & bedded it into the existing stock.

The whole lot cost me less than £800.

I have since added a MacMillan stock, which improved the rifle even more.

  6. Lapua (90gn Scenar, 105gn Scenar) and Norma (105gn Berger Moly) do factory 6BR ammunition, but only really useable for paper etc.

I seem to remember Savage made a factory 6BR rifle, and Ruger also used to. Not sure if they still do or how readily available they are.

To do it properly you really need to rebarrel, which means custom, or semi custom (Rebarrel a donor rifle as I did).

It doesn't have to be as expensive as you may think, and is the only real way to gain good accuracy.

I have the name and number of a first class riflesmith if you want to speak to someone that really knows what he's doing.

  7. I use a 6mmBR for all my foxing, vermin control etc. I had an old Sako A2 action rebarrelled, dropped it into a MacMillan Sako Varmint stock, and it

is the most accurate and versatile rifle I have.

I have 75gn VMax doing 3350 fps, 105gn Bergers doing 2810fps (This could go higher), both with excellent accuracy and good

out to 600 yards (Probably further...will find out this summer).

Lapua brass so far on 5th reload without need for shoulder bump.

I intend to find a deer bullet around the 90/95gn area that will give good accuracy over the next month also.

Recoil is less than my old .243, less powder, small rifle primer, a very effective round.

PM me if you want further info.

  8. You'd be surprised at how little markup they do put on new guns.

Don't be surprised if they laugh when you offer them 40% off list......

At the end of the day they are in business to make money, if they won't sell you the gun at the price that you want to pay, then try elsewhere.

  9. Doesnt suprise me. Seem sensible too.

I guess you can still give it to mates?

You don't need any accreditations to sell 'small amounts' personally to 'friends and associates' etc (The definitions leave it very vague and open to interpretation....). As Flytie said above you can use the 'Hunter Exemption'.

But to put it into the food chain via game dealers, butchers, (pubs/restaurants?) to be sold on, you do need the Large Game Handling accreditation.

  10. Oh I fully intend to, I just dont have fascilities for storing more than 1, and if i get a couple i would want to see it go into the food chain rather than wasted.

Before that becomes an issue i need to get the fac granted.

Legally you will also need a relevant accreditation before selling into the food chain via a game dealer/butcher etc,

which means taking one of the recognised exams. (DSC1, Wild Game Meat Hygiene Level 2 etc).

Unless your game dealer is not too fussy, but around here they are becoming very strict on this.

  11. yes mate just as you said vermin

not to sure to be honest mate but as canadiand are vermin they can be shot

Are you absolutely certain about that?

Yes they may be a pest, yes they may be a nuisance, but they are not classed as vermin.

Furthermore....if your rifle magazine is capable of holding more than 2 rounds then this is another law you are breaking

under Wildlife and Countryside Act 1981.

  12. Jamie where in South Warwickshire are you?

I know a keeper  who would possibly be willing to let you have some vermin shooting if you're sensible and safe....and willing

to put in a few hours helping out on work parties during the off season, and beating during the season.....

    PM me if you're interested.

  13. The law states where a single projectile is used there is no need for it to be lead free.

Its amazing how quick people are to judge on here!

Actually pal I wasn't quick to judge, I thought about it for a while and then judged.

Whilst I was thinking about it (Again, not being quick to judge) I decided to leave out my thoughts on ethics and just how much damage those

FOUR geese were doing to crops.

If my 'Not quick to judge' comment on lead was incorrect, then I now stand corrected.
