Good you enjoyed your day, perfect terrain and the snipes not to be sniffed at well done
Thanks Davyo
The terrain has certainly took it out on my legs
My neck hurts
Well done on the snipe ,great looking dogs to
Thanks for the follow up post
Thanks magman
The black one is my mates he is a Jem
The liver on is mine and he is coming along nicely, although he ran in on a squirrel that my mate shot.
I don't think he will do it again? He got a nip on the nose for his troubles then it latched onto my mates dogs ear before
It was dispatched.
You might want some deep heat for your neck (-:

Beautiful Dolgellau
Your most welcome , enjoy your day and report back with pic's
Thanks

1/4 choke and 7's
I've got 6's and 7's
-
Be aware of where your neighbors are and where it is safe to shoot as they are not known for flying high
1/4 1/2 choke with 6's will be fine
Thanks magman

Totally agree with WGD on this one.
Whilst on a fowling holiday staying at the Wool Pack in Long Sutton very many years ago the landlady, wash guide Frank Harrison's wife, stuck her head into the door of the main room that slept 6 fowlers and asked if anyone was cold? (It was about -5C outside). One bloke said he had been a bit chilly the night before and she replied "OK, I'll chuck in another dog"!
Maybe that's the answer - get another dog.
That might not be a bad idea (-:
-
Nice one matey glad he's making you proud it's a great feeling
Cheers Mike
Yes it's a great feeling

Lovely, the dog will give you years of pleasure to come.
I'm looking forward to it
Forgot to mention I won the sweep stake as well (-:

Today I have been out beating on a small farmers syndicate.
After a few weeks of cold game retrieves the time came for his 1st warm game retreive.
It wasn't a hard one by any means, about 30yrds out into a wheat field but he picked it and returned to hand without any issues.
Just when I thought things don't get much better and after the following drive I was called into a rape field to help look for a pricked bird.
It was next to a pit hole , and a couple of dogs and beaters/ guns had gone over the area before I got there.
Just as they said it was lost and began to walk off my dog walked out of the pit hole tail wagging and with a pheasant in his mouth with wings flapping.
Good lad (-:
Can you remember the 1st time your dog made you proud?

WGD and I have both health tested our springers for PRA Cord1 (an eye condition) and fuco (very rare but fatal) so we have an idea what's involved.
It's worth checking on mykc to see if any relatives have been tested for these conditions - if so it can give a good idea of your dog is a carrier or not. If not then if you want to, you can pay for the tests. I think the company is 'Optigen' for cockers but I'm not sure. Hips, elbows, BVA (eye test usually done annually) can be done. However as WGD has said, it's very easy to get hung up on health tests. It's a huge subject with lots of pros and cons, especially if you don't get the result you're hoping for which happened to me with 2 out of the four dogs I had tested who came back carriers for PRA. As they were to be detection dogs happily it wasn't any issue at all.
Note: not sure if cocker results automatically go to the KC like springers do with results from the AHT
Thank you very helpful I'll look into this

The dog will know what to do from then on...
Haha let's hope so (-:

Ok thanks I'll ask him that questionWhat kind of dog is it? As bigbird has said there are different health tests for different breeds and you can go over the top in my view. Other thing to consider is the keepers bitch health tested?
You will get a stud book number if he gets an award at a trial.
-
Fair dos to you Paul. What breed is he as there are slightly different tests and test companies for different breeds.
Not sure what you mean by a stud book. Is he KC reg?
Hi thanks big bird
Yes he is KC reg
he is a cocker spaniel
-
Hi
the keeper on the syndicate I beat on has shown an interest in my dog as a stud for his bitch.
This may happen some time next year?
My dog is 16mnths old, and I would like to know how I go about setting my dog up
For any of the relevant health checks? And if I need a stud book???
Please forgive my ignorance but I have never done this before but I want to be responsible.
Thanks
Paul

Tips on getting dogs used to hides
in Dogs and Dog Training
Posted
I took mine out behind the hide yesterday,
He sat to attention when shot was fired I was quite happy, the only mistake was made by me.
When I sent him for a shot bird I should have pointed him to the exit lol he nearly took the hide and poles with him (-:
