  3. had a couple of hours on some self set rape stubble yesterday.

not many about, but was itching to get out because i missed the main stubble due to being on holiday.

    i had 10.

opened up the crops on 3 and all had rape seed, barley & wheat inside

this is maybe why im finding it hard to find concentations of birds? they are flitting from feild to field mopping up?

    nothing specificly on the menu??

on a positive i got my young cocker out of the van at the end and sent him for a bird that landed in some long grass near to a hedge row.

he did a very good job im proud of him (-:

  4. I hope he isn't a chewer or your shed won't last long. For a single dog a small insulated box is better as their body heat heats the box up, the run needn't be more than 6 x 4 assuming he's out a couple of times a day. Dogs don't exercise themselves, he'll either be sleeping, doing the toilet or sitting at the gate waiting for you.

    no not a chewer

im looking at having his run about 8 x 6

had one built by a local shed builder on a 10x10 foot print, shed 10x6 run 10x4 under the same apex roof it looks good. I built the kennel inside at the far end giving the dogs sleeping area of 32"x68". and me a work bench it has a door into shed so I

can clean it, and a Perspex panel so they can see me. it is double lined for warmth in winter and is cool in summer.this area slept 3 Labradors, as long as they are exercised they sleep 90% of the day, when I'm working the wife does not even see them. Assaid opening is clad with 2x2 right angle galvenised tin. Hope this gives you some ideas.

    thanks

im doing the hard standing next week but you have all given me something to think about

    cheers

    Paul

  5. Think about your drainage first then the rest.....

I'm clearing the old sheds away and putting down a concrete hard standing.

I was going to dig a drain away at the end of the run for when I need to wash down the floor.

Is that what you mean by drainage?

    Sorry for my ignorance ?

  6. Pigeon don't pay much attention to combines and tractors being on the field, if the food is there they will be on it. I have in the last week watched pigeons dropping in behind the combine.

    Out of interest ,

I parked my van behind the hedge row I was shooting today, taking advantage of being able to drive across the stubble (lazy)

Would this put pigeon off? I don't suppose pigeon can distinguish the difference between a red vw caddy and a. Massey ferguson. Tractor could they ?..?

  7. If they are big ish fields you can get some decent shooting while they are still cutting , some years ago I shot a ton plus bag on a field of peas while they were being combined.

I have also watched pigeon dropping behind the combine on rape and gone back the next day and shot a big bag.

    Cheers Fenboy

There hasn't been much activity in the area, but I think it's worth a punt then.

A bad days shootings, better than a good days work and all that .

  8. Hey guys

Will combine harvester activity lure pigeon into the area?

My perm farmer managed to harvest two fields before his combine broke down,

Another field behind the one I'm likely to shoot tomorrow is part cut.

I imagine he will continue with this field tomorrow? And I'm wondering if the combine would put pigeon off the other fields or if it might be like ringing the dinner bell for them??

The cut field have been cut approx 3 days ago , there was a few birds flitting about today but nothing to get to excited about?

    Cheers

    Paul

  9. Very quite for me and my mate today

18 between us plenty about just didn't want to decoy magnet, no magnet flapper no flapper???

One highlight was the flapper must look realistic ?

A bird of prey swooped in on it twice it was to small to be a buzzard, sparrow halk maybe???

  10. excellent shooting paul,

its nice to get a pb mate and just keep at it mate you will soon double that score no problem,

    well done mate

    Cheers Bob

I'll be out again Monday trying my best (-:

  11. Had a go on some rape stuble yesterday ,arrived at one field to find birds dropping in,

My mate said "let's just look at the field down the road.

When we got there the birds were fighting into it better but the wind was in totally the wrong direction.

The hedge row we needed to be on would have our backs onto a country lane.

So we returned to the previous field, when we got there someone was setting up.

So back to the other with the wind in our face and birds going straight past

We decided to go and have a look for another field.

Not before we had 6 pigeon.

We found one with with a load 200 plus on ? and walked them off and decided to set up before seeing a flight line return as time was getting on.

    Any way another story

I have an eye dominance issue (left eye right handed)

for some time this has been on my mind while out shooting,

i was concentrating so much on sighting the bead i was missing most of the birds.

i had bought an easy sight sight for the top of the rib, same again couldnt hit a cows you know what.

i know my gun is a perfect fit because of the practice throwing it up in the bed room.

i have been going out with an old boy with 50yrs pigeon shooting behind him and yesterday he told me to remove that bloody easy sight before we started and he told me to just look at the bird

i was a bit unsure, it cost me £20 that thing,, anyway off it came.

by the end of the day i had achieved my PB 35 birds 28 picked 30 of which i shot, i felt guilty but Reg was insistent that i shot the incoming birds.

and he was enjoying watching me, what a gent.

obviously im no expert but i now see why gun fit is so important, I was throwing the gun up and watching the bird i nailed a couple of pearling left to rights and right to lefts yesterday

a really satisfying day out with me old mate

  12. After a bit of consideration and chatting, we went out and put a deposit down on a working cocker spaniel.

He is going to be a pet first but will look in to training him, i have ready the guide on here, which looks to be a sound guide and advice, but was wondering if anyone knew a gundog train in west yorks, that is good with cocker spaniels.

Got to wait another 4 weeks and then the inoculation period before, but nowt wrong with planning ahead

I'm not too clued up on whose who, but i have been told he is coming from good lines, Mother bred by Ian Openshaw out of FT CH Chyknell Gold Star and FT CH Danderw Druid & his Father bred out of FT CH Timsgarry Simpson and from FT CH Black Mamba lines.

    Great stuff

My cocker has Timsgary Simpson In his pedigree I believe a simon tyres dog.

My dog is just back from 12 wks with Tom Skelly based just outside York.

My geography knowlage of Yorkshire is limited , but if it's close enough to you drop me a pm and I'll give you his number

    Good luck

    Paul
