  1. Nicely done Grant. Hard to believe that you have only been shooting with a rifle for the last couple of years. Fair play to your mentor...though he is a little rude for my liking Missed....twice.....surely not. I never miss. I always hit something just not the intended target in all cases Many a time have I shot the grass behind, next to, or above the fox, but never a miss Good luck for tonight. I am having a couple of days off as I need to clean the man bag collection.
  2. Cheers mate. Drew a blank last night. Watched the pen from 9 -10 with the "day rifle" then over to the NV when it was getting too dark. Got to just after 11 and was knackered so headed home. Up at 5.30 this morning to do some building works before work...all go. How did you get on? Struggling big time at the mo with it all. Between work, house and bees I am knackered..thats before badly behaved foxes. I have ended up with so little time I cant really deal with the foxes before they cause problems so thats keeping the pressure on a bit. I have a few farms where the crops are nice and tall so at least I have a bit of an excuse. Glad you are keeping busy as always bud. Bet the illusive 72 or 76 is fast approaching
  3. Well done gents. I dont recall Ed being that plump when I met him Good result Saturday night saw me back out at the chicken farm. Pitched up on the bank watching the pen where they have been having losses and where I saw the cub on Thursday night. I had a quick scan with the lamp every couple of minutes just to see if there was any tell tale eye shine. About 23.00 I spotted something in the wood above the pen. Over to NV and there was a fox behind the wire. The fox followed the fence around the top edge and briefly disappeared from view behind a tree before heading down the side of the pen. At the first chance she was met with a 58 Grain BT round from the .243. Adult vixen so a good start. Text last night about 7.30 saying there was a fox in one of the other pens. I didnt get the text until 10 so back out tonight.
  4. Watched the pen for 2 hours and no sign last night. Shotgun sounds a good call, I ll take it over as well as the rifle and pitch up in the corner of the wood by the pen and see what comes by.
  5. Got a call about dead chickens on the 54,000 bird free range unit yesterday so headed over early with the .243. Sat watching one field for an hour and then all hell broke loose behind me in one of the pens. There was a good sized fox cub running all over the place in among 1000 or so birds.....between buildings and the high cover in the pen I couldnt get a bloody shot and the little sod disappeared...fortunately it wasnt an adult as there would have been a chicken massacre......back out tonight by the look of it....
  6. Sorry bud, I didnt mean to upset you. I have to use the .17 HMR when I want to make a fury man bag, .243 causes to much damage One of my mates has a few nice roe bucks to deal with..now he has his new custom 6.5/.284. Jealous....
  7. No mate I actually managed to shoot all of them. Any sign of you shooting a roe buck any time soon?
  8. Back out last night to a 400 acre farm that I have left alone for most of this year. They silaged recently so a good few fields are clear. First spot was quiet so I moved on to the next piece. Quick lamp of the field revealed a fox so over to the NV and shot cub no 1 at about 70 yards. Into the next field and a quick squeak revealed another cub who was dropped off the sticks at a similar distance to No 1. Nothing else showed so I moved onto the bottom part of the ground which was all quiet. Moved onto the last patch and saw some tell tail eye shine. Over to NV and I could see a fox in cover but it wouldnt move. I got to about 70 yards and set the sticks up and put the crosshairs between its eyes and cub no 3 (different litter) was down. Carried on past the cub and bumped a fox that was lying up in a quarry hole....headed around the top and saw 2 foxes sat down by where the cub had just been shot. Dropped the first one (which turned out to be the adult vixen) and the other disappeared. It was about 2.00 at this point so headed over to pick up one of the cubs that I hadnt picked up. Walked through the gate and yet another fox in the field. By the time I was set up behind the rifle it was wondering why its sibling wasnt moving and it was duly despatched. 4 Cubs and 1 vixen down. All in all a good nights work .
  9. Well done generally gents. Work and house have meant no shooting for me of late. Had a walk around our fields on Saturday and there was a dead ewe that had been stripped so a few about. Had a quick look that night and saw 3 on the bank but in a very tricky spot with loads of cover. Popped over onto the one field that has been cut and cleared and shot a nice vixen. A good start and back out on 400 acres tonight.
  10. Just to clarify..said pink handbag owner sent said call to Mr Ed a while back who lost it....If I sent the Gekkering call to anybody else who can send it to Ed that would be great..I am certainly not inclined to try and find it
  11. Well done mate (apart from the miss of course ). At least you got him with the second one. I have been on squirrel duty as they seem to have found the seed feeder in the garden. I have shot 13 in the last 5 days with the air rifle. Need to find some foxes this week and use my proper guns
  12. Cheers Grant. Lots of it going on just really winds you up. Cheers Ed. Just adds a load more work to the list and makes you even less trusting of people.
  13. Sorry boys...not fox related and just a rant about morality.... ..some thieving scum bags broke into my tool shed on tuesday and robbed off with over a grand of tools including my chainsaw, strimmer, disc cutter... Apart from that I had a wander about tuesday night to let off steam and saw plenty of stuff I couldnt shoot All in all not a great week.
  14. Well done mate. Saw 6 cubs playing in a field about 400 yards from the house about 16.00 the other day. Not ground I shoot or would be able to shoot but more then likely they will be over onto our ground soon enough at which point they are fair game. Keep up the good work
  15. Sorry mate, will crack on Nicely done gents. Chicken farms are a nightmare as loads to bring the foxes in and loads to prevent a safe shot. Keep up the good work.
  16. I wish the house was even ready for the occupants let alone the public mate. It is getting there slowly which is always the trouble with doing most of the work ourselves. I have just forked out a grand or so for a load of new oak beams to replace the knackered old ones so there will be a couple of days work to get those in. I have a set of steels to go in this weekend and then we should be ready to take the final measurements for the stairs. ... the list kind of goes on from there really. It doesnt help with the place being old stonework which has a tendency to either crumble when you dont want it to or be hard as iron when you want it to crumble. It took me nearly an hour with a disc cutter on Monday to remove enough of one bit of stone to allow the steel to slide into place. The day before I took some boarding away from another section of wall and a shed load of stone fell out of the wall... Keeps me out of mischief though mate Enjoy the hols, cant beat a nice bit of trekking.
  17. Sounds like and exciting session with your scope mate Enjoy your holiday. Let us know if you see any Kudu ...sure there will be a few baboons about
  18. Thats why I go out on my own (apart from being a tool and having no friends)..it avoids being scorned when I miss..lol
  19. Nicely done mate You boys must be on for at least 76 this year
  20. Well done gents. Bornfree- I am sure you will catch up with the fox soon mate. Apologies for the absence...BT Broadband has been playing up as usual so no internet at home...plus the mansion requires lots of work. Sunday morning I took some old timber panelling off (not posh oak stuff, some cheap painted pine) ...and about 200 kg of stone came out with it. That kept me busy for a couple of days rebuilding the wall. It doesnt look pretty with a mix of stone, brick and blockword but its certainly not going to fall down again thats for sure. Keep up the good work gents
