  1. Thats awesome mate! Did you use decoys to get the blacks? I need to start culling some of the crows on my shoot as I have just gained permission to my shotgun on there!! The place has vast amounts of crows! Any advice gratefully received!! B) Si
  2. Thats what I did as I wanted to know exactly where the main pattern was going. I was pleased to see it was just above as my first gun which is a s/s aya yeomen shot well low and needed a comb raiser desperately! I feel much more comfortable with my newly bought Beretta A303. Fits me well! Cheers Si
  3. I tried 3 cartridges out in my 303 to try to determine which is the most suitable. Can anyone give me any advice on how I can determine which is the best of the 3 cartridges on the pattern plates? Is it worth drawing a perfect circle around the main pattern to establish which has the most shot in the area? Cheers Simon
  4. Cheers mate! That was my next question. I thought it must be for a key on the end. I definately have the friction key if thats the choices! I'll keep an eye on it and nip it up as much as I can with the current key (which isn't much tension) for the moment! Thanks for your advice. Si
  5. Thanks mate! So an acceptable procedure is to push the key in and turn it until it slips (which is not much tension). Si
  6. After the first outing with my newly purchased Beretta A303 (which I love!) I noticed whilst cleaning it that the choke was slightly loose. I 'nipped' it up again. Being new to shotguns I realise there is only a small amount of torque I could get on it without the key slipping. Is it ok tap it in (with my hand) and to turn it until the key slips slightly to ensure it is firm enough? Cheers Si
  7. I think it is a very good idea to get the hang of where the gun is pointed! I was actually thinking of where I'd get the lend of a cheap lazer pen to try it! There will be some deviation due to patterning etc but its a great starting point! )
  8. Thanks guys! I find that my shotgun shoots quite alot lower than where I aim and since 'pointing' it in the direction, my hits on stationary targets are about 90% and improving constantly. Just need some clay action to get used to passing birds! Was practising in front of my mirror to make sure I am pointing at the right level i.e. pointing at my right eye (above the rib) and getting the hold repeatedly in the same position each time. Cheers Simon
  9. I am getting the hang of the 'pointing' not 'aiming' my shotgun but its taking a while to stop shooting it like a rifle (aiming). When you shoot a rabbit thats stationary do you guys actually use the nib to 'point' at the target or ignore it and point it as if it is an extention of your body without looking down the rib to the nib? Hmmmmmmm.... Also do you use the nib on moving targets such as birds moving across you? Is the rib/nib just a rough guide until you get acustomed to where its pointing or is it a 'pointing' aid? Cheers Simon
  10. Sounds good to me! If you don't want it let me know!! I am possibly after 1! Simon
  11. Good advice Jerry! Yeah I thought that I'd be better on the clays before live targets! I do spend hours trying to perfect my zero and range finding technique to prevent wounding animals. Will seek lessons - just wanted to go out to get the feel of it first in case I went up in smoke! Cheers Simon
  12. Yeah being an air rifle enthusiast - I am an aimer! Going out on Sat so will try the revised techniques from everyone posting on this thread and from the useful link provided by 'the last engineer'! Thanks guys. I take it its normal for a s/s to shoot lower than an O/U then? Simon
  13. Thanks 'the last engineer' that site was very useful! I def aim it rather than pointing! Need to work on that! Simon
  14. Cheers! If the comb is raised I will prob be able to see the rib anyway I think but I'll give it a try!
  15. Hey guys. Was out on Sun with my newly purchased AYA Yeomen s/s. Got my SGC on Sat  I found that on a patter plate the gun was shooting over a foot low (the top edge of the pattern was a foot down from where I aimed). I am new to shotgunning and presume that when holding the gun the rib should appear flat with only the nib visible? I am I correct in that? Anyway I tried holding it differently i.e. so that I could see all of the rib rising up along its length. I think that improved the pattern placement over the target. Can anyone point out what I might be missing or doing wrong? I missed 4 crows by shooting below them so I think next time I will cover them with the barrel (it they are flying away) as I was placing the nib just underneath them before! Thanks Simon
  16. What's the barrel internal like? i.e. any pitting etc? How old? Where exactly are you?
  17. The point of impact changes sometimes as a result of looking through the scope at a slightly different angle when lying prone/shooting off a bipod in comparison to when you are shooting whilst standing. To demonstrate this, with your gun rested, look through the scope, then move your head up, down and side to side. Note how it changes the position of the crosshairs in relation to the target. Hope that is the answer you are looking for Simon
  18. Thanks for all the feedback guys! The one I am looking at is £200 in good condition. It has multi chokes. The only damage is one of the ejectors came off whilst the owner was cleaning it but he said there is no problem when it is together and works fine. Simon
  19. Advice needed on Aya Yeomen. I've seen one for sale. How much are they worth in good condition? Whats it like to shoot etc? Quality? Cheers Simon
  20. I put it in the wrong section before! Reposted it in this section with the hope I could delete the other but couldn't work out how. Does anyone know how to delete threads started by yourself? Cheers Simon
  21. Thanks mate. What is the going rate for a one in excellent condition? Cheers Simon
  22. Thanks for the feedback guys! Sorry if the question was a regular post.
  23. As title. I saw one for sale and wondered if anyone knew much about them? Cheers Simon
