I was out delivering my fishing baits today, during the morning I had consumed a few cups of coffee at a couple of my drops with the usual chat etc. As I left the last drop I headed out on a country road making a shortcut to my next destination, I was bursting for a squirt so I pulled over in a small pull in at the side of a field. I noticed plenty of pheasants in the field close by before my eye was diverted by a massive flock of pigeons that erupted from the next field of rape.
I was amazed at the size of the flock for this time of year, it seems a bit early for 1000 plus birds altogether now. I watched as they just settled back into the rape and was pretty much pi**ed off as I have not seen that many over my permission.
A bout of inspiration came about me and I was soon searching the surrounding area for farms, I stumbled across one and gave the old door a knock. This is usually pointless but always worth a try you never know.
As the farmer (Mrs) came to the door I politely asked if that was her land to which she said yes, and then went on to ask if they had any pigeon control as I had seen a flock of 1000+ birds devestating that field of rape.
She said yes my son does all the pest control but he is away untill next Tuesday, she then went on to say that if I wanted I could get on there NOW and also the weekend untill he returned. I was gutted because it was a 55 mile journey back home if I needed to fetch my gun etc and it was already 1pm turned. I offered to come anytime at their convenience but unfortunately I was unavailable this weekend due to a 2 day fishing festival I was attending.
We had a short chat and she told me that they walk the field at least 3 times a day to scare the birds off and her son shoots a few shots regular but they just keep coming back!!!!!!!
I have left my calling card and hopefully I may get a call back, but will definately be dropping back in when I pass next week.
That has left me gutted, but will live in the hope that they will see it makes sense for someone to be on there and let the pigeons have it big style.
You will forgive me for not divulging the whereabouts, shooting like this is hard to come by as you will all be aware.
