We got 2 fields of recently harvested maize on one of our permissions. It was cut last Sunday and not a solitary pigeon has taken notice of them, even though one of the harvested fields has been left out on the ground. I thought after 2 days rain, they would have been ravenous today. And would have gladly hit the fields with a vengence, the weather being dry and blowy. But as eager we have been waiting to get at them, every time we'v phoned the farmer. Same reply comes back, nothing on them today mate. All the land around has been harvested ages ago, so we are pretty stumped as what could be keeping them off said banquet. So we are sat biting our nails now and a bit frustrated waiting for that lovely phone call, saying its all systems are go. Any know What natural food about, which could be kepping them off the fields. Or is maize not all that apetising to woodpigeons.

Thanks

I've also had a few blank days on maize in the past. Start out all excited about how this is going to be the red letter day you dream about and then nothing. My most dissapointing crop by far.

As Codling says too many other atractions around

I've not shot over maize so I have to ask the question is there that much spillage at harvesting? I imagined that whole cobs were taken and where ears spill seeds in barley and wheat plus undersized are discarded I can't see that happening with maize to such a degree. The fields on the permission are ploughed and rolled now so we are limited to flightline and roost shooting , my pal did put the decoys out on some headlands and turned over a few so thats what I'll be doing tomorrow.

The spilage at harvest is from the chopper driver missing the trailer and overloading them.(The whole plant is chopped into tiny pieces) There will be small patches of spilt maize all over the field maybe more on the headlands where the trailers run too and from the clamp. As for being limited to flighline and roost shooting for me this is the cream of pigeon shooting although smaller bags are the norm.

How did you get on today?

Plan B had to take herself's Scooby back for an MOT retest- fail was a broken

antiroll bar link (made of plastic I ask you) after her chauffuer used

it to go shooting (according to herself) easy job but included a shopping trip.

Could be walked up ducks in the morning :good:

Update : went for evening flighting instead hung about under the crow/pigeon

flightline flushed one from the tree canopy but dead quiet, heavy cloud meant

early night nothing flying , went and set up on the duck but it was getting too

dark to get a clear view when a single Mallard dropped in and bailed shortly

after encouraged by Ace (ESS) clean miss as the duck crossed into the shade

of the trees.
