Chance in a lifetime

I shoot a field next to a mere. It's a well-established mere with about 20 tiny but overgrown islands and a couple of long spits.

I've never really had great success shooting the field next door as the ducks and geese very rarely fly over it, and picking the right time to pull the trigger is awkward as I don't have a dog to retrieve birds that land in the water. So far this year I've had one mallard of it.

But tomorrow morning things will be very different...

The owner of the mere has a boat which he uses for pike fishing, but tomorrow - for one morning only - he's dropping me off on one of the islands slap bang in the middle :w00t:

And this morning we've been out to cut down enough vegetation on it to make myself comfortable and swing the gun around.

Even with the sound of the axe and saw cutting through the undergrowth I counted 45 duck (mallard, tufted and teal), a dozen canadas and well over 100 greylags fly within shotgun range

What's more, this island is right next to the warmest and most sheltered part of the mere - it's where all the fowl come in.

He's dropping me off at 7am and coming back at around 1pm so we have plenty of time to retrieve shot birds in the boat.

This, to me, is a chance in a lifetime.... I ain't going to be able to sleep tonight - no way :D:rolleyes:<_<

Just spoken to the chap who owns the mere...

As a thank-you for helping to keep the rabbit numbers down on his lawns and allotment, he's letting me have full access to the lake, his boat and any of the islands, whenever I want.

What a result !!
