Sprocket
Brilliant feeling to see them swim for the first time -some thing you'll never forget. My first springer pup spent the first few months of his life getting a free ride around the garden-hanging off my GSds tail. Best part was when I threw a dummy into the lake without realising the pup was latched onto the GSDs tail -next thing I saw was the pup surface from the under water and make a hasty return to the bank. He is now 5yrs old and is one of the best water dogs you could wish for. I hope the same goes for your pup and he keeps the navy seal trait going! jimmyb79
I have an excellent training tip for dogs and water. My very first lab was petrified of going in the water the first few times he saw it. Until, one day he wanders down to the edge of the lake and spies.......a doughnut floating out about 10 feet. Splash, straight in, retrieves said (soggy) doughnut and proceeds to eat it on the banks of the lake. He has never hesitated going in ever again! Well done....must be a relief...just watch it that the dog doesn't get too cold while it's so young
Delbert
Very definite result there , a good introduction to water saves an awful lot of problems later. Some dogs are born to swim some need encouraging and some get frightened for whatever reason, the owner then spends a lot of wasted time undoing the damage. libs
Sounds great, my lab was the same, and now once shes seen water thats it, from a dog with almost perfect recall to out-of-control with the slightest hint of a deepish puddle she might be able to paddle in. I introduced my Springer pup to water, with the help of the GSP and a few small sticks, at about 5 months. Like most Springers once she knew what it's all about she loved it, took about 15 minutes. Our local field is flooded at the moment with puddles the size of small lakes, she goes nuts running through and ends up looking like a drowned rat, the pointer tends to tippy toe around the edge .
