rlewis
I will soon be getting my shotgun certifcate( when it comes !!!!) and will then be looking at getting land. So the first queston is how do you come across to the farmer ie on the farm, stop on the road etc I have never done this so iam a tad nervous and what should i say !!!!! Iam only 17 so i think they will not let me go as they think iam not old enough!!! Should i wait another few years until iam older ? bobbo
to be honest i think if you are a genuine young adult farmers as such will be more keen to let you on to the land, it sort of re enacts the youth in them. good luck
cooter
You may come up against it as you are still young, but it is always worth a try. Do you have any cards made up? There was a post earlier for this place, and it does look good. http://www.shootingcards.co.uk/index.html If possible you should get your self on a few drives, and get your face known. There may also be poeple you know that have land to shoot, and might allow you to tag along, so ask around. Helping out on the farm will also get you noticed, but it depends on what you can do, so a little research may be called for. The farmers I shoot for get asked at least once a week, and so they can be quick to judge. With this in mind; Be polite. Dress smart, but looking like you know your way around the country side (Rambo don't always cut it here). Take no to mean not right now, so just say thanks, give them your card, and leave. I always seem to speak to the farmers wife first, and so be prepared to pass her inspection as well (take that to mean what ever you want ). albob
don`t ask, don`t get..as they say. don`t let your age worry you and when you talk to one farmer, remember what you said and alter it for the next if need be. some people are good at talking.some are awkward..i fall into the later but,it does get a little easier as you go along and farmers don`t bite. if you get a card made up and if they say no,leave a card for future reference,as no may mean we have someone but, they may not be going on enough to make a difference. i looked and tried for 2 days solid, got 1 shoot and possible other(did get this 3 month later). so go for it and good luck. al
townsend819
Best thing to do, is metion it to everyone you have a chat to, many premissions are a friend of a friend job. Next, as the former is not the most direct of means, smartly dress yourself, and do a tour of all the local farms and golf courses complete with introduction letter and permission slips just incase, be polite, as first impressions always count, because the worst they can say is no, but always give them a letter for just incase. It can be very disheartening, as the first few will probably a no. But then you strike gold with one farm, Like me with only one 3 acre shoot gained after trudging round 20 farms in my village, on a pushbike I might add. But that one farm has brought many a bunnies for me, and my local butcher, who takes them in at a pound a head for good ones (no myxy). Im still looking for more, and I will get there, but patience is your best friend. Oh and I am only 16, so I find that the age is an issue, unless you prove to be responsible and knowledgeable, i.e. quoting over carry ranges, ricochet risks, shooting round animals etc. Hope this helps, Will (PM me if you need any more advice on anything like gaining permission etc, I have extreme sympathy for all younguns' without the opportunities I have shooting wise)
tigger
All of the farms around here have shoots on so the way i did it was to offer my services as a beater to the gamekeeper and hey presto loads of land to shoot, ferret on etc etc i think that is the best way to aquire land. Good Luck

Sir missalot
ive only got the 1 farm to shoot on myself and will be looking for more over the next few weeks, best approach would be to tell them that shooting is YOUR hobby and by gaining permission they are doin YOU a favour, no point goin on about the services you can provide as he knows its you thats gaining anything from it, so no point pretending you run some sort of shootin for free services, or so i believe, others may think different tho. i try not to bother the farmer to much as he will have more on his mind than someone shooting pigeon etc on his land, just leave your car reg with him so he knows its you shooting when he sees your vehicle, the only time i go to see him is at the start of the year with a bottle of wisky and a new permission slip for him to sign. Hope this helps.

SSS
Have a knock on some doors and ask politely, and introduce yourself. You will probably get more no's than yes's but don't let it bother you. Keep going and good luck. I got some new pigeon shooting the other week and it turns out the farmer is a member on here and was selling some cartridges. I didn't realise it was him until he phoned me and his name came up on my phone. What a coincidence. Any way, enough from me, Good luck mate
