But OTH, not all farmers fields are arable.

Yes I give you that but still damages the field be pasture or arable or set aside I know none of my farmer would be to keen on the sort of damaged being caused by some shooters.

When we have had the sort on rainfall across uk lately it time to get the quad out I cant belive there is still shooter lamping in 2 ton landys .

Respect the land is my motto and be seen to as little damage as poss be it making a hide in the hedge or driving to the field and if that means me using shanks pony then so be it.

Regards OTH

So reading back through the topic I can't see anywhere where anyone is saying they've been driving over fields etc. What's wrong with lamping in that weather if you want to? Doesn't mean you're driving over fields now, does it? Someone can get bogged in other places than fields and no-one has actually said they were bogged in a field, only that they were bogged.

Anyway, let the topic get back to what the OP intended it to be.

decoying mad, I'll send you a pm.

on the overall situ defender it is then and ive heard about the secret landy hand wave its all abit masonic isnt it ;) must agree though theylook 10 times better than a disco :good: :good: :good:

And the other major down side to a defender is the price tag yes there good but IMO they are overpriced.

Say a good early 1992 on j reg 110 csw 5 to 7 k is strong it is good if your selling but so good if your buying.

In comparison a 1992 disco 1 200 tdi they are only 500 notes to 1500 notes.

I know which one I would go for if money was tight the disco still has the great 200 tdi slighty higer gearing loads better on the road motoways etc.

And if you have lady friend they will get on with driving it if you are short the later 300 tdi is better as it got the r380 gearbox with the reverse to right and backwards .

The earlier 200 tdi has the lt box with the reverse to the left and forwards can be a right pain if you are short and give you back ache.

Regards

Farmers son at Hemsworth is about that and well build (we call him Agrid). He has a defender and never mentions any problems. Only criticism I have, and it's a small one, is limited arm room for the drivers right arm.

and, as a quick edit. Lorraine is 5ft 4ins and drives HER 300TDI defender better than most blokes drive a car.

I'm 6'2" and it's fine for me. It's a different driving position to that of a normal car, and when I first sat in it, it felt *really* awkward, but that's just because I was comparing it to a leather-seated luxury 'normal' car. There are doofers you can buy to increase legroom - I bought these:

http://www.exmoortrim.co.uk/files/riser/seatriser.jpg

They're a doddle to fit, and lift the seat by a couple of inches. But to be honest I'm thinking about taking them back out again because the higher seating position puts my head too high to see out the side windows properly! And as I said, once you get accustomed to the different driving position, the legroom isn't a problem.

I also don't have any problem at all with elbowroom. In winter my elbow rests against the window, and in summer it hangs out the window. Easy. And the great thing about being high up and close to the window is that you can lean out and see what both wheels are doing.

I drove the Defender all the way from Cambridge to Land's End this summer in a single push (about 8hrs!), and the only thing I found slightly uncomfortable was that the transmission tunnel got a bit hot, and it's close to where my left foot sits. But there was nothing about the driving position that was uncomfortable at all. Don't let scaremongers and naysayers put you off!

and, of course, other drivers wave to you :(:D

I still haven't quite mastered that! There are some real keen Defender drivers about. I get a lot of attention in the latest one due to the winch bumper and the smashed up front end. It shows I drive it to use it I guess, but it's a little weird being waved at by strangers!

I think the milage you do and what you want will answer your question. If you drive a long way or want to be comfortable like you would be in a car then go for a Disco. If you want a rugged legend that will let you know what the weather's doing then go for a Defender. I like mine because I know I can scratch it, dent it, push things around with it and it will still look fine. Try repositioning a 6 yard skip by ramming it with a Disco. That's the latest use for my Defender and it doesn't look any worse for it

Ok i have owned 2 disco's 1 defender , i currently own 1 defender and 1 mitsu pajero .

The disco's i drove like i stole every day of there lives with me (on road only)

The defender i drove like i stole on and off road . Only let me down once when i drowned it , i was in water that deep that it was coming through the front vents , this on a defender that had a 3" lift and had 35's on .

The pajero so far has had 2k thrown at it to keep it going , only driven on road and never thrashed .

Just got me latest defender , still on 200tdi though , driving it like i stole it , 200 miles so far with no problems . ALSO THE HEATER DOES WORK .

Gotta be a defender for me ! either 90 , 110 , or a 130 .

all the best yis yp ;)

disco for me everytime, value for money, warm and comfortable when lamping, good cheap shoot cars..

as for jap import 4x4's wait till they need a gear box, stand back and watch them cry :) lol.. landrover the best 4x4by far.. also if you break down in a jap motor all you other jap drivers just drive on by lookin forward.. not so if your in a landy...
