Cookiemonsterandmerlin.
As the title suggest I have been badgered by a lad I know for a while. So with some many birds about I thought I would arange a day out for us both he book the day off work. I have been recce this field for a while and have let the birds build up as there was no fear of others shooting due to myself having sole rights. So with a good 4 thousand birds feeding hard I have found it does not pay at the moment to get there to early. Arrived 0900hrs we setup in a group of four large oaks in the cetre of the field me under one and him under the other 20 or so yards apart . With a large M shape pattern out in front shooting was hot for the first two hours . With quite a few missing due to him not leeting the birds commit properly so pop out and got him to come to my hide. And then let him see how close you want to allow them come to max the situation. After 15 mins he returned to his hide and we really start to knock them down between us. He was well chuffed he had two left and rights my dog had to work hard as the rape away from the grazed patch is very high for december . I think I may have hooked another to wonderful sport of pigeon shooting . Regards OTH

Catamong
Yes, good post OTH, but the problem I've found with virtually every "newcomer" I've introduced to the game is that they get on the bird far too late, not too early, the bird is already on the way out and away from the deeks before they've even got the gun up, in most cases they're way too slow. Now, I realise this only comes with experience, certainly clay shooting helps people get the timing on when to shoot the bird a lot better. Cat. Cranfield
Nice gesture OTH, they can stretch the patience a bit, but its worth doing. I have had newcomers leave birds far too late, but I think they get overawed by the situation (almost freeze) and only fire when they see the bird is getting away. Cookiemonsterandmerlin.
This lad was keen he was trying shoot them 50 yards plus even with 32inch full chokes and 32 grams extreme just cartridges he was struggling , still the joy of listening and learning and then connecting with the birds said it all in his face.
