snipe
My cocker bitch has just started her second season, which is a bit of a pain being as it's the middle of the game shooting season. I went to a shoot today and didn't take her with me, for obvious reasons. But how long should I keep her at home for? without distracting the dogs on the shoot to much? This is her first proper shooting season so I'd like to get her as much experience as possible so would like to get her back into action as soon as possible. She is still bleeding, but it's clearing up, so after reading some advice in this section of the forum I understand that this is when she is more likely to stand, so definitely a time to take precautions! Further to that, I heard from someone on the shoot today that you can get an injection to stop a bitch coming into season during the shooting season. Is this widely practiced? and how safe is it? Thanks, Snipe.
potshot
The norm is about 21 days for the whole season but individual dogs can vary a day or two. Whatever you do, do not try the injections as they will cause your far more trouble. Been in dogs for 25 years plus and the twice I used them on different bitches both were a complete disaster - just not worth it.
lewis
My cocker bitch has just started her second season, which is a bit of a pain being as it's the middle of the game shooting season. First off, That's the great joy's of owning a bitch I know it's very tempting to take her shooting when she has just started but it's not worth the risk. Usually i dont take the bitches out atall when they are in season. Not only are the vulranable but are usually a pain in the 'cough' Edited December 26, 2009 by lewis

Any sure fire way of telling when the 21 days or so is up? The season caught me by surprise so I have no real way of telling when it started. Thanks, Snipe. Greenhunter
Day 1 of her season is the first day you noticed any colour! It might not be the actual 1st day but you shouldn't take the chance of guessing. I've had bitches conceive from a 17th day mating so you(or she) could easily get caught out. potshot
There is no foolproof way of knowing. If you scratch round her tail or upper thigh and the tail comes straight up or curls around then she is definitely still ready. There are bitches that have successfully mated very late on so be very cautious. My own bitch also had a litter of ten from a mating on day 17.......... You need to keep track of her seasons so you can predict when she is due in - most bitches establish a regular pattern but you can get hiccups for instance being kenneled with another in season bitch can bring it on early. There is another reason for not working her during her season - again like women they all react differently with their hormones all over the place. So if you put her under great pressure whilst working, perhaps because she is not reacting in the way you would expect her to normally, then you can do great damage and ruin a good dog. That said some bitches sail through seasons with no change at all.
rickyspringer
my bitch is in season too pal, there is no rush at getting her back out there, you say its her first full shooting season so a little break will do no harm, less is more in alot of cases.
