dingocatcher
Hi folks im thinking of buying a airgun, don't want to spend to much but know nothing about them. My question is which to go for spring or air? I am wanting something fairly powerful but as said don't want to spend to much as i have a .22 magnum and a shotgun but am wanting something for a bit of quiet fun1 Thanks
Edward
Most people will say pcp (and they're right) but I say springer, because you dont run out of air halfway through the day, I would say an AirArms tx200 of some form or a BSA lightening XL in .22 of course
dingocatcher
Cheers I was thinking of a springer too as for all the shooting i will be doing with it i don't think i can be bothered with the air. What sort of money would i expect to pay and would i be wise to buy new or second hand? Regards David

Edward
I think you could pick up a new xl/xl tactical with a decent scope for less than a tx

Colster
Had a go for the first time today on a Tactical XL in .22 and have to say was very impressed. Very easy to cock, light and quick handling. Good trigger and very quiet. This thread is only about 10 minutes away from someone mentioning Weihrauch... Colster
wot sort of money and scope are you talkin? New one works out about £250-260 and scope wise avoid the Richter Optik's that gun dealers seem to think make great packages. For budget end stuff look to spend around £60-100 on a scope and consider second hand. I paid around £60 for an immaculate Simmons Whitetail Classic, I also have an Simmons Aetec (for sale at the mo for £75) and a Hawke Varmint II which cost me £40. All great scopes for airrifle or rimfire ranges. JSR's own brand scopes are good also look at the mid range Hawke's and Bushnells.
dingocatcher
This might sound like a stupid question but how long does a spring last before it starts to weaken?

para90
was in the same boat bud, different sport altogether barely use the shotgun now. whisper quiet pcp is the way, had mine for a couple of years now and wont swap it. daystate harrier .22 bought myself a nv scope lol fantastic sport . get a st pump mate you wont run oot of air plus if your have a busy day/night in the winter, after refilling your rifle you ll be roasting hot  springers are not in the same league for accuracy . happy shooting
birdman99
If your intrested in a decent scope i have a hawke eclipse 50 x lens you can have it for 25 pounds Also have a hw90 if your wanting a gun thats not air or springing it runs on a theabon gas ram, best gun ever, just to heavy for a 9stone lad like me,ha,ha. you wont get better accuracy than the hw90.ask anyone who knows about air rifles and there will tell you.tell me what gun was made in 1990 and still sits on air rifle mags and shops on the shelf 20 years later for 450 pound<tells its own story Edited January 3, 2010 by birdman99

redkite
Hi I am no expert but if the rifle is for hunting I would go for air over spring for these reasons....... Having to cock a spring after every shot is a pain. I have a Theoben Rapid (pre-charged) and have had numerous instances where I have taken a shot and missed but been so well hidden that the target has stayed put (this happens mainly with magpies and wood pigeons - I always go for the head shot and with all that bobbing blah, blah, blah....) and I have taken the second shot and made a kill. That simply would not happen if you had to recock a springer. Cover would almost certainly be blown. You can reload a PC with hardly any movement and without any noise if done slowly. I would also suggest that effective airgun shooting often relies on sqeezing yourself under hedges etc and this is not conducive to cocking barrells! Finally, if a second shot is required where a clean kill is not made then it can be done easily in less than five seconds with a PC - not with a springer though. On the other hand I live five minutes from a gunshop where I can have my 'can' refilled and they don't even charge. If I live thirty miles from such a shop then I might think and say differently.
