Doggone
I am going to start my reloading during the week I have got Hodgdon Vagret powder with nosler 55 grain varmint ballistic tips using radway green brass how many grains of powders should I use with these cases? Hi, I started reloading a year or two ago and the first thing I was told was get a reloading manual. It's a bit frustrating when you've bought one and the specific powder or bullet you want to use is not listed, but why not use what is listed untill you become more familiar with the whole process? One thing I wouldn't do is use suggested loads from other home loaders on a forum. All it takes is a typo or slip of someone's memory to leave you in a very dangerous position. Sorry if this sounds patronising, it certainly isn't meant to. All the best with your loading anyway, hope you get as much enjoyment and satisfaction as I do from it. garyb
I wouldnt use RG brass, if you don't know what you're doing... Stick to brass in 223.
shotgun sam
I have the lee classic in 223 remington the data comes with it gives the range for hodgon vagret between 21.9 grains and a maximum of 27.5 grains. I have loaded up 30 rounds with the 21.9 grains just to see what results I get. I was given the brass by one of the members of the club who has sized the brass for me He told me the type of heads, primers and powder to buy and then go onto the net and try to find the best powder rates to use we are going out in the middle of the week to try to get some foxes based on the re loads that I make. jamie g
varget is good powder you should see good groups with it. there are lots of good powders for 223. benchmark being one of the best for this caliber to. what barrel twist rate you got ? best to buy and stick to one make of brass to keep things consistant. federal brass is pretty good but try get some sako brass. or better still lapua. its very dear but prob the best brass on the market Edited January 4, 2010 by jamie g
monkeymagic1969
Very good advise from all here - but if you are going to just load without a manual at least take a look at the Hodgdon reloading data on this web page http://data.hodgdon.com/cartridge_load.asp use the drop downs for your correct load type (Rifle) - cartridge (.223 Rem)- then the correct head weight (55grn) - then correct powder (varget) I used to load in my Tikka T3 Hunter Lapua brass 25.5grn Varget CCI BR primer 55grn Nosler BT 2.250" COL Make sure you start 10% lower than the recommended charge and work up till you find a load that suits your rifle And always remember, its better to have Accuracy over Velocity every time Edited January 4, 2010 by monkeymagic1969
macca
Hi, I believe you will find varget is the Australian made powder AR2208. The website for the manufacturers reloading data is http://www.thalesgroup.com.au/handloaders-guide/rifle.asp Good quality military brass is fine to use if prepared properly - full length resized with 223 dies and the crimp removed with a crimp remove reamer(slightly different to a primerpocker reamer). Once shot the brass can then be necked sized. Personally I use 25.5gn AR2206H (H4895) for a very accurate load. Benchmark2 (benchmark) also gives superb accuracy. Mr_Logic
I'm just switching over to H4895, I got a 5-shot group of < .5, and 4 of those were basically in the same hole - one flyer that was almost certainly me. 27.5gr behind a 50gr V-max. Good powder, IMHO better than Varget in 223 as it's a bit quicker.
