Marcus
Thanks for the replys guys. Can I just turn up at SW2000 or do I have to become a member first? I have only shot a sporting layout so far, never done skeet, is sporting covered under the 'trap' section (sorry Im a novice and havent got to grips yet with all the terminology) What times are they open on Sat & Sun? Thanks
Taff Mason
hello mate, yeah you can just turn up an shoot whenever you like, no need to become a member but if you shoot there a lot you will save a few quid by joining. as you drive in there are about 6 trap and skeet ranges on your left. they usually put on a mixture of disciplines and a compaq sporting layout too. there a re a few novice stands there too and these can be good for building your confidence on and just warming up a bit before you move onto the proper ones. some of the lads i shoot with do a few pairs on them before we shoot. then up the hill either in the top field or around the back there is a very good sporting section. with pretty much every kind of bird you will ever come across. if your not sure about the different disciplines, in general they are: TRAP-birds going away from you at different angles and elevations. (there are a few different types such as double trap, automatic ball trap, down the line ect, but the principle is the same with all of them) for these you want a tight choke and a large shot size like 7.5 because the birds will be quiet far out by the time you shoot them. SKEET- the same birds over and over again, crossing you at different angles from a low and a high tower, as you move around a semi circle.(they have english skeet and olympic skeet, which is faster and in a slightly different format) for these you'll need a very open choke, and small shot size like 9's because you want to put as many pellets as you can in the air to hit the clay which is pretty close to you but moving very fast. it can be a bit intimidating when your new to the sport seeing all the regular guys with all the gear shooting really well, but i can assure you most people up there will be more than happy for you to shoot a round or two with them, and answer any questions you have. mid day, mid week you'll pretty much have the place to your self though. you may find that if there is a big comp coming up they will tend to put more of a certain discipline on but you can always find something you like there. they usually open from 10 untill dusk, an don't use a sat nav to get there because it sends you to the wrong place Edited January 4, 2010 by Taff Mason

Dont forget you also have Treetops in Newport which is not that far away from you, the ground is open Monday - Saturday & its a real good ground to shoot :( tel 01633 681197 Thanks Blackbird, will give them a ring also, this looks a bit closer for me. Is it a 'set up yourself ground' or is it like SW2000 and just turn up and shoot? I went to SW2000 today for a look. Impressive place, and the guys I spoke to were helpful as was the lady in the cafe, friendly bunch. Trouble is its a bit of a trek for me, its what im looking for in terms or 'turn up and shoot' and open on Saturdays, but would like something similar, and closer to Bridgend. Treetops sounds promising, as its closer and open Saturdays, which I need to take the boy, as he has Rugby commitments on a Sunday.

Hi Marcus as a fellow South Walian I wondered how you got on with finding a new ground? Nelson isnt too far from me so interested if you went there, or anywhere else. I Rang Nelson, they do ABT and DTL its undercover so no rain worries and non member prices is £5.50 a round (25 clays?) cartidges £4 ish for 25 so £10 a round basically Open wednesday and sundays might pop up there sunday and have a go at DTL Well went and had a go, its different to sporting but still a real challenge (for me at least), very friendly bunch reconmend a trip there if your local and are free wednesday or sunday Edited February 7, 2010 by HDAV
