Theyre coming thick and fast now, another 154 since last post, just arent enough hours of daylight at moment, even trapping last week with a head torch.

Thats 463,and start another 1000 acres tomorrow, currently have 300 traps in the ground, even had the missus out checking traps with me today and kicking off hills.

66 traps put in the ground today, started the 1000 acres,5 fields took me 6 hrs to trap and kick all the hills off.I have a horrible feeling this might be a long job as these 5 fields probably only cover 45 acres.I have never known fields where its so hard to find the runs, most of the traps were at least 18 inches in the ground.

This is the worst year in the last 4 I have been trapping this farm. Loads of mole around. Couple of really large patches holding 2/3 of them. Is there any way that moles have nicked a bunch of Viagra round these parts? I used to get by with 6 traps but now have 3 times that.

Another 34 today, back to the 66 traps tomorrow so that should add a few more, put another 55 traps in the ground today, got interrupted with a rat job.

Vole I have to agree with you that the moles are certainly making themselves busy,I put 35 traps in a 1 acre field this afternoon that the farmer forgot about last year,it took me 2 hours to trap and kick the hills off.

Thats 499

I have just got written permission to shoot any calibre approved by the FEO on the farm providing I continue to sort the moles. Off out with more tunnel traps I bought onto a new patch the farmer mentioned. Only wish I did not have a full time job so I could be out there all the time. All the grass verges and fields round here are rotten with em. Not even taking the shotgun as am busy checking and moving the traps.

Another 2 yesterday. Found a bank with thin soil with tussocky grass. The whole of it seems hollow with mole runs. Got 10 traps on it but it is going to be tough. Hard to find good straight bits to set traps in.

552.

Got a golf course to start soon on the coast, lovely sandy soil, gently does it there otherwise you just collapse the tunnels..

Checked my traps yesterday and they were all stuffed with dirt. I only set 7 but they were in good runs. One in particular has become trap shy I think. You know when you have set one which is a dead cert? Well I set a few on his patch only to blank. Think I am going to have to shoot him.

Vole be patient the ground has been very dry and so the tunnels are shedding soil which has to be cleared but its raining now so hopefully you'll have him next week when the ground has absorbed some water and brought the moles up again, which will make the tunnels firmer.

only 57 this week but 300+ traps in the ground before the rain got here last night.

Got the trap shy one Sunday morning. Had covered that patch a few times and no success so well pleased. There is another difficult one down by the river that the farmer pointed out. The soil is really powdery and that one is evading me. Glad it is not making too much mess but I have to make a detour to get to it. Will see how I have done tomorrow morning. Ta for advice. When the moles are gone I will take my new rimfire along and have a go at the rabbits.

  • 2 weeks later...

I have been to the farm 3 times since my last post and there are no more new hills apart from the odd one so I hope they are just passing through to the neighbouring property. So with fingers and toes all crossed I think the farm is just about clear but will keep all my traps and gear up there handy. Been a bad year for the blighters.
