malkiserow
How do you test if the 4 wheel drive is working?..... this test might have to be done in a town depending where the seller is What is the road tax for vehicles registered pre 2001 March 31 and Post 2001 March 31st ? (i guess not a lot!) When do they become rust-buckets and start to fail big time? What are the common faults? Boromir
I pay about £175 a year in road tax on a 2001 plate. So your guess is wrong about its cheap. My workmate has a mitsu warrier and for him its £160 for commercial vehicle. To test if 4 wheel drive is working engage 4wd turn engine off and free one front wheel of the ground at a time if it turns its not working. One common fault is the Airhub system to engage 4wd it uses air to engage it you see, but I think this is easily fixed. Check the axles and joints etc for leakage to see if things like the kingpin bearing has gone. I got a 2001 plate and have noticed rust underneath my car but seems to be ok at the moment just need to replace my exhaust as its got a hole in it somewhere. Take a look HERE really good website it gives you step by step guides to fix stuff like wheel bearings.
shot shot
you could lift one of the secondary drive wheels off of the ground (usually rear I believe). If the 4x4 is working, it should spin Edited January 19, 2010 by shot shot

Sauer
simple test to see if working ( works in low ratio \ box ) keep jeep in 2w drive and outside guys house if need be find area like car park where you can turn the wheels full lock and go round in a circle.. ok? right now stick car or jimny or whatever in 4w drive low box and repeat ..... at full lock itll feel totally differnet like the car is try to rip itelf off the wheels ,, it wont want to go as easily as before at full wheel lock you will be able to feel the difference immediately if you cant then its not in 4w drive ps do this nice and easy not haring round at full lock try it with your own motor sauer
Andy75
Yes defo try the above gently! Rust isn't an issue for these so far, as a lot of the lower bodywork is plastic over steel, so not a lot goes wrong. Be aware that (iirc) the softops are made in Spain, and the hardtops in Japan. I have had zero electrical and interior probs on my hardtop, but the parents' softie has had all sorts that I have needed to put right inside. Exhaust back box has a tendancy to rot, about £35 to replace. Post 2002 vehicles will get the higher tax rate (£190 for 12 months), but have a better engine (twin cam 16v, ECU tweaked and chain driven cam as opposed to 16v single cam and belt driven cam)
malkiserow
where did you say this was? i'll fetch my bike seriously though could you not take your belt off and strangle it? i know its a bit barbaric but it would shorten its suffering if you looped your belt like a noose then sit on the floor with a foot either side of the belt against the back of its neck and pull the belt and push with your feet, would think it would only take a couple of minutes max, its better then the alternative poor thing Thanks for the replies....... i am keeping my eyes open for one at the right price.... and defo a hard top for security
