Mucker
*** is going on?? I have over 2000 acres on one farm behind Bury St Edmunds and myself and a friend went up yesterday morning about 0630hrs, set up, cup of tea, the lot, waiting for the pigeons to wake up and start feeding on the rape... We left about 1430hrs having seen 1 solitary pigeon (and shot it, well my mate did) all day!! And i mean, just one. We saw maybe a dozen Hares over the course of the day, 6 Roe/Fallow Deer in a field across the way, and at one point we saw 4 Buzzards (2 pairs) fighting it out for territory above our heads. But no pigeons!!! Now, there was a tremendous amount of Pheasant Shooting going on around us all day, but i would have thought that would have kept the pigeons moving around, instead of scaring them away!! A complete waste of time...!!! Just thought i'd let ya all know.... Humph!!
Cranfield
If things are that slow, it sometimes pays to move around. In my experience on cold, frosty mornings, or when its raining hard, they can be very slow making a start out to the fields. Its also noticeable that the days are starting to get lighter, that influences their feeding cycle a lot.

Mucker
Nice bike Mucker,is it yours? Yes, that's my bike... Well, as it used to be. I'm just about 80% through rebuilding it again. She's gonna be a 1950's style "Bobber" when she's finished. Real big Ape Hanger bars, Springer front end, skinny hand-spoked wheel on the back and a massive 21" front wheel. Finished in a rather nice air brushed Johnny Cash homage when the dry builds over.
petera
To confirm the earlier post it pays to move around. Spent the first two hours this morning and only shot 5 over the rape. Packed up but drove past another two field half a mile away on the way home on which there were hundreds of pigeons (None there the previous day). Set up again and shot 8 in the first 10 minutes. Only spent an hour at the second field but ended up with 23 in total. The magnet worked well this morning and if it had not been turning round and round I think theywould have landed on it. Just shows how different each day is as I went out yesterday and only shot 2.

I'll heed that advice in future, today we sat for around 4hrs, freezing our nutts off, for four pigeons, after warming/thawing out in the motor, we move to another field and had a great couple of hours

fieldwanderer
haven't seen more than a handful on my permission for weeks but have seen plenty in fields elsewhere. Time I got a second permission methinks, or concentrated on ferreting or give the shooting a rest and concentrate on training the dog up and doing the other jobs I need to do. Alanl50
Same here in Ipswich, big flocks on the rape one shot and thats it, Farmer rings me up this morning, get here quick huge flock of pigeons on his rape he put a shot up moved his gas gun and they just went to the other end of the field, I leg it there with all my gear I shot 2 birds, plenty in the sky but they wont come in. I tried with the magnet and with out the magnet, floaters high, floaters low and no floaters, changed the formation of my decoys dont know how many times, took them in a few at a time, in the end then gave up ! I had a roe deer walk past my hide, hares playing a few feet in front of me. A bit of luck though I got another farmer, a really lovely person, his wife as well, who lets me shoot on specific fields, he has one old boy he's 70, his only shooter on the land, who has been going on is land for years and he has a magnet but they all reckon it too fast so I explained about speed controllers then I offered to get him one, took it to him today the farmer asked how I was getting on I told him it was slow he then told me out the back of his it blue with them, the converation carried on then he said he had a text from the NFU yesterday saying the next 2 Saturdays coming are, "Pot a pigeon" days and if it was slow on my farms I must come and shoot on his the next two Saturdays a result I believe
