roebuck243
Hi ive seen massive number of pigeons feeding on wheat ?? they have been there for a few days now so isnt a one off.I think it may have been potatoes last year but not sure only guesing.Do you think it will have been a previous crop they are coming for.I must admit they are liking something and will be getting at them shortly. They have been there now for a while and large numbers arriving in small groups which is a bonus. Can someone suggest anything is it last years crop bits or fertilizer etc
Catamong
Well, one things for sure, they're not eating the Winter wheat, are you sure they're not just resting up there, ready to flight onto a nearby field of rape..?? Alternatively, there could be a lot of rubbish, (chickweed, clover etc), sprouting on the field and they're after that..?? Cat.

tungsten
Funny you should mention it. While driving past, I noticed a few weeks ago a huge number of pigeons on a field (not my permisson), which I assumed to be rape, passing it again this week it was clear to see it was wheat. 6shot
i would say the could be resting. i also heard they pick up grit sometimes to help digest there food (not sure how true it is)
M ROBSON
I see them on winter drilled fields all the time. It could be a number of things mentioned. 1. They are picking at chickweed. 2. They are eating rotten tatties as wheat often follows on in the crop cycle. 3. They are picking minerals and grit to aid digestion. 4. They are sitting in the sun and flitting to another field nearby. 5. All of the above!! I was watching about 500 woodpigeons on a field yeaterday that was ploughed 2 weeks ago, they were picking away just before hopping over onto a barley stubble. Cheers, Mark. Highlander
Try decoying them, you'll soon find out if they really really want to be there! Most of the time if you look closely they're just sitting resting like they do in trees. If they are feeding it's on the remains of an earlier crop or weeds or they're simply gritting.
