Frost

I was on a game shoot yesterday, in the snow and the cold winds.

There were pigeons in and over the woodland all day.

I expected the weather to be the start of a cold rough spell, that might "start" the pigeons on to the rape.

Went over to the farm this morning for a recce.

Frost in the shaded areas, but a bright sunny day, no sign of snow remained.

A few pigeons moving about and sitting in the trees.

No birds on the rape at all.

I drove around and looked at other fields on other farms and saw no large groups of birds, just a few here and there.

Its interesting that none of our local farmers have put out "bird scarers" yet.

They do, in large numbers,as soon as the pigeons become a nuisance.

Same here. Went out early this morning, very cold with a hard frost. A very few birds mooching around in trees and very occaisonally flying down to the bits they had bashed earlier, but no big flocks or vety many individual birds. Very disappointing. :P

:P Well I started this thread so I will now reply.Went out yesterday to a farm that my mate had met the owner of at a new year,s party and had been told that "there,s not much on the rape at the moment but you are welcome to come and have a go". We got there and saw a 100 or so feeding on 1 field and the same on the other field nearby so with hopes high we went onto the farm.Didn,t meet the owner but met the leading farmhand who immediately said (read Deakos parting line) "all week those 2 fields have been blue with pigeons but not so many today". We left the banger going in 1 field and set up in the other after switching that one off. They immediately poured in after switching the rotor on but neither of us were ready,so hurried shots and no kills. The day continued with regular birds dropping in but after shooting clays over the holiday my shooting was pathetic to start with.(Who ever says that clay shooting improves your game shooting, should give me a few lessons because when I swap from 1 to the other, they both suffer at first) To sum up the day,we had about 40 but it should have been many more. The cloudless sky and blinding low sun making all the gear shine like tinsel didn,t help but was a good day out nevertheless and will be going back in the near future. :(

ernyha,s point that clay shooting can affect your "bird" shooting and vice versa, is one I totally agree with.

I also have a theory that it revolves around the lead you give the "target".

When you shoot the clay it is slowing down, when you shoot a bird, it is usually accelerating.

This was in part confirmed when I shot clays some time ago and missed some early targets.

The chap who went round the stands and "buttoned" for us, is an Instructor.

He said I was missing in front and was over leading the clay.

The last shooting I had done had been on high pheasants, that needed a lot of lead.

He said this was a common problem with bird/clay shooters.

They recommended that you have one gun for clays and one gun for birds.

The idea being that when you pick up one gun, you think"clays" and the other "birds".

I think its cheaper and just as effective to remind yourself where you are and what you are doing.

It works for me.   :P

So we turn up at the field saturday ERNYHA and me ,you have herd it all before .The field is blue come and shoot the dam things.Well saturday we  were there deeks, WIRLIGIG and FOG ,thats allright when the fog lifts they will be swarming  in well after 5 hours and the dam fog has still not lifted, freezing cold and only 3 birds to show for our efforts we return to the motor, only to see the fog lift and the pigeon peel in to feast in earnest. To late we left annoyed at a day waysted.

Sunday report; Observed in WARWICKSHIRE after a severe frost the birds did not appear to feed on the rape till after 12 o clock.
