Right i am on the verge of putting in for a centre fire rifle as i have now had my FAC for 6 months and feel it is worth a shot. Now i was having a snoop around the rfd today and they have got a second hand mauser in 25-06 i forget the model and the bonus is it is left handed which as am i. Now o know little of this calibre but does it have and advantages or disadvantages over .243? as in difficulty for land clearance availability of ammo and so on? any advice kindly received,

Its a bigger buller than .243 so land clearance is an issue. It is basically a .30-06 case necked down to .257 (6.5mm) so is a fairly hot round.

Recoil isn't too bad, more than a .243 but not as much as a .270.

Good deer and fox calibre all in all, and it will handle a large range of bullet weights.

All the best :good:

Hi i take it you mean 243 which is a great round had one for 5-6yrs. I now have a 25/06 which is basically a 243 on steroids or like an 243ackley improved which i wanted but couldent aford so got the 25/06. I home load have done for 13yrs & bullets vary from 75g to 120g as it is not quite 6.5mm as has been said it is. I use 75g v-max 87g TNT & 100g heads & have used 115g-117g & 120g but there not as good in the 1-10 twist. As for land clearance it should be same as 243 really so you should get it on the same ground. As for rifle the mauser is a good rifle & some have set triggers on them & should be very accurate. The 243 would proberly be easyer to get rounds & have more choice & slightly less expensive & i must admit that it is a very good underestimated round. If you can pick up the mauser at a good price then the 25cal might the one to get.

Truth is I don't know that much about the 25-06, looked at it and discounted it some years back, not convinced anything much has changed from my point of view!!.

But if you are a lefty and one is available it must be worth a look. Ammo choice will tend to be less and probably a bit more expensive than .243, if you reload then not too much of an issue I suspect.

Interesting area, I have a .243 and find it easy, responsive, accurate and it "works"!!!

If by any strange chance I need a bit more than .243 I simply take out my .308!

I also have a .223 so with those 3 and the VAST ammo choice available for them I can cope with most things!

If I just had one CF and the choice was .243 or 25-06 I suspect I would still go .243!!

:good::oops:

Thats the thing i understand that mauser are a very well regarded maker of rifles and it seemed to be very reasonable money i think it was around £450 i may have been wrong. i shall have to go back for a closer look and find the model and exact price.

Depending on the age of the mauser think about spares like a new magazine, I have a mauser mod 225 and had to get a new set of mounts from apel to get the scope that i had on, these cost in the region of £200, if it is a modern mauser then you should be ok and i would recomend them.
