Nice day so i dragged myself out of my pit and went for a shufty about.I took the 20gauge out with me for the first time in about 6 months, i do like shooting this little gun when decoying pigeon.

It has to be said it wasn't that encouraging the only place i saw any pigeon they were outnumbered 10-1 by blackies. As there was a light frost and i could get along a field margin without chopping it up i went for a closer look and decided "what the hell it's a nice day". The field in question has a number of hides in it built by myself over a good few years so it was fairly simple to get my back to the wind, although i did need to do a little pruning to get in. Having said that I was only really left with a 90 degree angle of fire so anything slipping by the deeks would get away unsaluted.

I set up with an assortment of full bodies, flocked shells and a dead and slightly iffy real one that was discovered (by nose) in the car this morning as i set off. As I didn't have two for the magnet i left it in the car. Sat down and realised fairly immediately i had a problem, sure i had the wind to my back but i also had full sun in my face, not something that crossed my mind when setting up. Still couldn't be donkeyed to move so had to make the best of it. When sat i realised that i had missed the flight-line by about 50 yards and birds were passing me by to my left. But they were not of the decoying kind of pigeon, these were on a mission to get somewhere and not even slowing for a gander. Eventually a crow made a fatal mistake and flew slowly right over me, about 15 mins later another committed the same crime and paid the price. I then decoyed a crow to the two upside down ones in front and that was added to the bag. After an hour or so a wide bunch of pigeon missed the flight line and whizzed over me, i missed the lot. Another lot followed and i managed to scratch one down. I now had two with the one i found in the boot the question was to rotary or not to rotary.

Decided not to bother again and tough it out, added another crow and a couple more pigeon. The the flight-line started to look more interested with some birds putting the brakes on for a look but not committing to the pattern. Had a bit of fun for an hour and added half a dozen, it was hard though and i was starting to form quite a pile of empties for very few birds down. Driven pigeon from the sun, can you say squint bang bang missed it?:good:?

Bit the bullet and made the trudge back to the car for the rotary, as soon as this was up the transformation was amazing i pulled everything off the flight-line and some from fields away!! I had ones, twos, thees, half dozens, dozens, twenties and on one instance about 500 decoying lovely. Suprisingly i had a few even land and were shot on the deck, not something i've found usually happens with a rotary out?? I wasn't shooting that great and it took me all flipping day to score a right and left, when i did manage it it was another of my 3 for 2 specials with 2 falling to the first shot and 1 to the second.

Finished with 43 picked and 4 blackies, probably another 3-4 pigeon in the wood 100yards away but not found in a quick search. Total shots 99, not too bad considering the shakey start i guess i was nearer 5:1 than 2:1 in the first couple of hours.
