Cosd
I'm going to start with an apology as I am not technical at all when it comes to gun bits so my terminology will be useless at best, so please bear with me. Whilst cleaning my Browning Medalist (12g O/U) last night I noticed a lose part on the fore-end. On the end of the fore-end that meets the action, on the bottom part, there is a piece of metal that protrudes slightly, it looks like a flat rod and slightly curved at the end; This part was very loose. I don't know what this part is called but it's purpose I believe is as the gun is broken, it pushes into the lower part of the action where it meets two flat rods in the base of the action and pushes them back into the action if that makes sense? Without the barrels attached, I married up the fore-end with the action and moved the two pieces as though the gun was being broken, I could see that because this part was so loose and there is quite a bit of play, instead of meeting the two rods and pushing them, it is possible that it could actually slide over the top of one or both of them and not push them back at all. If this makes any sense to anyone, if one or both of these rods are not pushed back into the action when the gun is broken, what symptom would I see on the gun? I have managed to tighten this part back up and it will now do what it is supposed to, but I have had a problem with my gun on the last couple of outings and I wanted to see if this is the possible cause. Please help!!!!!!
RArch
It sounds like the loose piece on the for-end is the bit the resets the hammers by pushing the rods back when opened. If it was not pushing those rods back the gun would not be able to fire one or both barrels, the trigger wont click properly, its also possible on some guns that the hammer would not have been fully reset which means it may not have had enough force to strike the primer to fire the cartridge. * Added missing word Edited March 5, 2010 by RArch
mcw65
If it was a "browning " i may have been able to help but the medalist is slightly different as it was made in Italy by Sabbatti

Cosd
Guys, I think I have got the answer I was hoping for. The last couple of outings my gun has not fired the top barrel. I took it apart the other week and made the action look like brand new inside on the back of advice here on the forum. I went out yesterday and on the last few shots it did the same thing. Of course Dennyessex will back me up in that I would have surely hit three left and rights had my second/top barrel fired, but it was not to be Joking aside, this is sounding like good news. I'm now hoping on my next outing both barrels will fire now this lose part has been sorted. Thanks guys!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! Vince Green
Don't mess about, take it to a gunsmith and get it looked at properly if you are in any doubt whatsoever. Something is not right and thats an expensive gun.
triumphant59
Had the same problem with a 20g Medallist. The loose parts you describe are the cocking leavers and yes they can come loose. Make sure you keep them tight but dont over tighten. If they come loose again I would try a spot of thread lock on the screws.
