Dunkield
Quick question, and I understand this will be dependant on the part of the country and other variables, but... at what time of the year would a bucks head reach it's peak? is it during the rut? say July time? sako751sg
Quick question, and I understand this will be dependant on the part of the country and other variables, but... at what time of the year would a bucks head reach it's peak? is it during the rut? say July time? Most heads should be near enough full growth by now, although the majority our way will not be hard antler yet and still in velvet. The only advantage in leaving them until julyish is to get them a darker colour, that improves the scoring in the case of a medal buck. I wont be out unless there is a dramatic change in the weather, and the first weekend i will take the rifle and mostly recce, although if there is a chance i will be taking it. Dunkield
Thanks Sako, the one I had in mind is still very much in velvet - but looks impressive, I am looking forward to seeing again without velvet and in season.

Some can be shot in velvet and still cleaned by hand, but only if they are well on.Colour can be added by hand, although the CIC measures will give you a zero for colour if they suss. The old fella shot a cracker two years ago in velvet, and we stripped and coloured and it scored just over 130,making it a gold.It can be very tempting to shoot them when they are not clean, esp if there is a chance of someone else getting it,but a huge head in velvet can be dissapointingly small when clean.Hope yours turns out to be a good one,and hopefully a medal.
