Cracking day yesterday weatherwise,so knocked work on the head at twelve and went home for the dog and rifle.Headed out to the same wood as last week where i knew there were still at least 4 bucks.Got there about 2ish,and headed over to the valley. The marching farm was sowing parks that go right down to the valley,so only stayed for an hour, and then decided to try somewhere else.Only saw a doe,but when i got back to the jeep,i saw 2 bucks and a doe, about 80 yards away and checked them through the scope. Both were in velvet, and looked shortish,so i set up the sticks and scoped on to the easier of the two,and he droped on the spot. The other one moved and gave a clear shot, and he also dropped straight away. When i went up to the first one,i was quite dissapointed to have shot it in velvet,as its a 7 pointer with very big pearling and would have looked ok clean.I was gutted when i saw the 2nd,as the mass of pearling and coronets is something i have never saw before. He is only a 4 pointer but is very unique. Both weigh 14kg lardered, and im pretty sure they are from the same calving. The area they were at,is where i had a huge 10 pointer last year,so possibly a food source leading to abnormal antler growth is in abundance or maybe the old bucks genes. For young beasts, the heads in future years could have been very interesting.

Cheers. Most still in velvet fella, only saw 3 clean out of approx 15 ive seen since the start.Would have been cracking heads, not medals but very unique. They are both stripped now and boiled, but it would have been nice to see them clean. Also still growing as the points are rounded and the velvet wasnt near ready to clean.

Hows your body weights? All but one has been quite lean for the body size, and the winter here had definetely taken a lot out of them.Id like to leave them to clean, but in some places they have to be culled as soon as.Four of the five have been the same 100ish acre wood, and it took me years to get on and only after they had done plenty of damage.I watched two yesterday morning hammering the larch, but there was no way of getting into them. Its a matter of time, but a buck can do a lot of scraping in a week.

Nice shooting mate. Great write up and photos as always. Like you say it is a great shame that they are still in velvet but what can you do at this time of the year.

Keep it up mate, it's always a pleasure to read about your shooting "exploits"! :):hmm::lol:

Will pm later in week and see when suits you.75 grain for everything with the .243,obviously apart from the red.

Where's the young lad today ? He would have been chuffed to see you get those !

Are you going to leave the velvet on or have a look at whats underneath ?? It would be interesting to see whats under there

He was away at a football practice thing run by Aberdeen Football Club.Needless to say he comes back a worse player than when he went.

I have them both bleaching the now,and will post a couple of pics later in week. The velvet was nay near ready to come off,so i will bleach the antlers too and hopefully the blood stain from removing the velvet with come off.
