Luckyshot
Had a look out yesterday with Harry me polecat hob. Game keeper on one of the farms I shoot was complaining to the farmer that he had seen 8 rabbits going into a large set at the top end of the field. This set was gassed last year to try and keep the rabbits down as it is quite a large set damaging the corner of the field. After 20 minutes driving through fields to get there I saw 5 rabbits bolt into it, looks promising. After netting up 40 holes I put Harry down to do his work. He was down about 5 minutes when I turned the locator on and found him to be settled in one spot this only means one thing with him, there is now a dead rabbit in this spot. Two seconds later one bolts into the net and was quickly dispatched first one of the day. Back to the spot where Harry was and he is still there so digging it is, 2ft deep on the locator so not a bad dig. Turned out only 18” so that was a bonus and one dead rabbit. I picked Harry out and put him down another hole about 5minuites later he was sitting in one spot this time 3ft deep again not a bad dig and another dead rabbit with a not so good looking head. This carried on for another hour and I ended up digging for every rabbit averaging 1-2ft deep and all dead which Harry is good at as he will only kill by eating their head unless he has no other choice and then he will just eat anywhere. So after all the digging I ended out with 7 rabbits and an aching back but a very happy farmer as the keeper wanted to gas the set again which as the farmer keeps telling him “gas costs money you know” After doing this I headed to the local shop for a drink and to change the wheel on me Landy as I seem to of had a soft tyre when a bloke came over and asked what I was doing ******g silly question but ! I told him been ferreting and picked up a soft tyre so just changing the wheel before heading home. Ok he said do you do much shooting around here? Yes I’ve got about 5 or 6 farms that I shot quite regularly. So you wouldn’t be interested in any more land then would you as my brother has a small place just 10 minutes up the road and he is plagued with rabbits and my sisters farm is in ********* ****** if you ever pass that way. Well I could always go and have a look for you if you want, well if you wouldn’t mind here is the address Ile give him a ring and tell him you’re coming up. On arrival at this farm only quite small 120acre there were quite a few rabbits about but it was getting dark by now but I still managed to shoot 6 rabbits and a squirrel (my first on the ground) before it became to dark to see through the scope and I didn’t want to lamp it without walking the boundaries first, so I headed home and will check out the sisters farm sometime next week so roughly 200+ acres for a 70p can of coke bonus.
