pigeon shooting

Recommended Posts

Hi all.

Was out yesterday. With the sun shining and a modest wind blowing conditions are okif the sun would go in for a while as my plastic deeks glint in the sunshine...(memo to self to get some flocked deeks at 1st game fair i can get to). Anyway with the deeks out ( wide open horseshoe pattern and a bouncer on the left hand side to try to encourage the birds into the middle dog and i settled into the hide to await the grey horde.

And wait.

And wait.

An hour later things began to move however 2 hrs after arriving and with only 6 birds in the bag i though we would be in for a slow day. When all of a sudden it was like someone had turned on the pigeon tap.

Birds began to arrive in 2's and 4's and i was regularly cutting out 1 with the occasional right and left and for 20 minutes or so things were really busy. In fact such was the excitement shooting and stuffing cartridges in the beretta that when things slowed and i had some 15 - 17 birds in the bag i sat down for a cup of tea after checking the safety on the gun. As i poured the tea another bird came straight in and divebombed the bouncer (which was drawing the birds very well) as i mentally noted the place i was going to shoot it, stood, tracked the birds line and swung just in front and pulled the trigger and was rewarded with ...................click ............Oh fudge!! upon inspection the beretta was empty HA HA HA HOO HOO but it was safe which was the main thing. After a serious word with myself and a look of complete derision from my canine companion said gun was loaded and the birds gave me just enough time to drink the tea before things went a little nuts again.

Keeping careful track of the berettas payload and safety i enjoyed another busy streak for 30 mins and with 25 birds now cooling in the grass and with time running out i called a halt for the morning.

Blonde canine is coming on well, she still views the stop whistle as a personal challenge but she is steady...ish in the hide and one retrieve in particular springs to mind. One of the birds towards the end of the morning that i killed at around 35yds and 30yds up had spun on the wind and came down some 80yds away. i sent her out and some 40yds from the area of fall she picked up a scent line from a previous line. For once she stopped to the stop whistle (well, within 6 -7 steps anyway HA HA) and looked at me.... with a firm "get out"!! she turned and headed into the correct area scented the bird on the wind and returned triumphantly with it........ Ahhhhh she drives me nuts but i did have a smile on my face after that one.
